Take a walk in the desert. Its hot and dry-and full of life. An elf owl peers out at you from its home, a hole in a saguaro cactus. Nearby, a desert tortoise stretches its neck to nibble on a wildflower. From the thick green stems of cacti to fluffy jackrabbits, the desert is teeming with life. Narrative text and you-are-there photos put the reader in the middle of this misunderstood biome and critical habitat.
Spend the day walking through your favorite biological community in this series focused on different biomes across North America. With captivating color photographs, readers experience walking through the biomes such as the Boreal Forest and encounter each area of the forest as they go, from frozen spruce needles to a moose family crossing the water. Serving a dual function, the books present information about the biome as a larger entity as well as the specifics of each interlaced food web within it. VERDICT This series works well to answer questions from biology class while also fueling new ideas for projects with its strong visual appeal.-School Library Journal

Hot sun rising over the desert Just before dawn a kit fox pads quietly - photo 7
Hot sun
rising over the desert
Just before dawn, a kit fox pads quietly across the dry
ground. She spies a kangaroo rat beneath a cactus.
The fox springsand catches her pups next meal!
She is lucky. The time for hunting has nearly ended.
Sunbeams are flickering over the landscape as the sun
rises. Chuh-chuh-chuh-chuh-chuh! The rattling call of
a cactus wren breaks the silence. The fox heads for
her den as another day in the desert begins.

Does the word desert make you think of a hot wasteland of sand Is it a place - photo 8
Does the word desert make you think of a hot
wasteland of sand? Is it a place where almost
nothing lives or grows? A few deserts are like that.
But most have more stones than sand. And many
deserts are full of life.
Deserts are the driest places on Earth. They are
found where rain is scarce and the air is very dry. In
western North America, deserts stretch from Idaho
south into Mexico. The largest are the Great Basin,
Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts.

Most North American
deserts are home to
many kinds of living
things (right) .
