Dim light
filtering through the pines
A white-tailed deer fawn wanders quietly among
stately pine trees. It bends down to nibble a fern.
Suddenly, a pinecone falls from the treetops. It lands
with a thump on the ground. Startled, the deer leaps
back. With a snort, it disappears into the dark green
shadows of the boreal forest.

The boreal forest is a wild place in the far north.
Boreal means northern. Millions and millions of trees
grow close together in this huge forest. Like wooden
soldiers, they stand side by side, straight and tall.
The boreal forest stretches across the northern
parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. It forms a
nearly unbroken belt of trees that circles the Earth.
Like a dark green
carpet, millions of
spruce trees cover
gently rolling hills
in the boreal forest.
