The National Gallery lets you tour Europes art without ever crossing the Channel. With so many exciting artists and styles, its a fine overture to art if youre just starting a European trip, and a pleasant reprise if youre just finishing. The National Gal is always a welcome interlude from the bustle of London sightseeing.

Cost: Free, but suggested donation of 2-3. Temporary (optional) exhibits require an admission fee.
Hours: Daily 10:00-18:00, Fri until 21:00, last entry to special exhibits 45 minutes before closing.
Getting There: Its as central as can be, overlooking Trafalgar Square, a 15-minute walk from Big Ben and 10 minutes from Piccadilly. The closest Tube stop is Charing Cross or Leicester Square. Handy buses #9, #11, #15, and #24 (among others) pass by.

Tours: Free one-hour overview tours leave from the Sainsbury Wing info desk daily at 11:30 and 14:30, plus Fri at 19:00.
The audioguides are excellent. Choose from the one-hour highlights tour, several theme tours, or a tour option that lets you dial up info on any painting in the museum (3.50).
The Gallerys ArtStart computer terminals help you study any artist, style, or topic in the museum, and print out a tailor-made tour map. Find them on the first floor of the Sainsbury Wing and in the comfy Espresso Bar (described below).
Length of This Tour: Allow 1.5 hours.
Cloakroom: Cloakrooms are at each entrance (free, but 1-2 suggested donation). You can take a small bag into the museum.
Photography: Photos are strictly forbidden.
Cuisine Art: There are three eateries in the Gallery. The National Dining Rooms restaurantlocated on the first floor of the Sainsbury Wingis cool, classy, and pricey for a sit-down meal (15-20 entres). The National Caflocated near the Getty Entrancehas table service (15-20 entres) and an easier-on-the-budget sandwich/soup/salad/pastry buffet (3-4). Both places offer Afternoon tea. The self-service Espresso Bar, near the Portico and Getty entrances, has soft couches, sandwiches, and ArtStart computers. Outside the Gallery, several options are on or Near Trafalgar Square.
