In a small house near the river Godavari, there lived a fisherman called Gopal. He was very poor. Everyday he went to the river with a net to catch fish. Sometimes he caught two or three fish in the net. Then he took them home and said to his wife, Ratna! We have food for today. Sometimes Gopal could not catch any fish. On those days he and his wife drank water and slept.
Ratna always wanted to go and live in the town. She was unhappy to live in a village. But Gopal liked the river very much and was happy in his small house.
One day Gopal got a big fish in his net. He felt very happy because he and his wife could eat it for two days. But the fish started talking. It said, Dont kill me. Leave me back in the river. I want to live. Gopal didnt want to put the fish in the river. The fish said, Please.
But my wife will be unhappy if I leave you in the river, said the fisherman. Then the fish replied, Tell her about me.
Gopal put the fish back in the water and went home. His wife said, What happened, Gopal? No fish today?
There was one big fish in the net, but I left it back in the water, said the fisherman.
Ratna was very angry and said, What? You put the big fish back in the water? We have no food today then?
What can I do? The fish talked. It asked me not to kill it, said Gopal.
What?
It asked me to put it back in the water. It said, Tell your wife about me.
Ratna got surprised and said, Did it? Ok. You go to the river tomorrow morning. Get the fish in your net and ask it for something.
What should I ask for? said Gopal.
Then Ratna said, Some food and a new pink dress for me.
Gopal went to the river next day in the morning. The big fish jumped into his net.
My wife wants some food for us and a new pink dress for her, said the fisherman.
Ok, put me in the water and go home, said the fish.
Gopal went home. He saw his wife wearing a new pink dress and there was some food on the table.
You look very beautiful. Are you happy now? said Gopal.
No, I want food and a new dress every day.
The next morning Gopal went to the river and told the fish, Ratna wants food and a new dress everyday.
Put me in the water and go home. She cant have everything she wants. said the fish.
Gopal went home. There was food on the table and his wife wore a new green dress.
Gopal said, Dear, are you happy now?
No! I want a big house with furniture and servants to serve me, said Ratna.
The fisherman went to the river in the morning and the big fish jumped into his net.
What else does your wife want, Gopal? the fish said.
She wants a big house and servants, replied Gopal.
She cant have everything she wants. Put me in the water and go home, Gopal.
Gopal went back and found a big house in place of his small house. His wife wore a blue dress and was on a swing in the garden.
You must be happy now, dear! said Gopal.
No. I want this country. I want to be the queen of this country, Ratna replied.
In the morning Gopal went to the river and the big fish jumped into the net.
My wife wants this country to be her own and wants to become the queen of this country.
The fish didnt speak.
She cant have everything she wants, said the fisherman.
You are right. Put me back in the water and go home, said the fish.
Gopal put the fish back in the water and went home. He saw his wife in his old small house
and there was no food, no servants and no money.
There was a lake in the middle of a big city. A large number of fish and crabs lived in the lake happily for a long time.
Many factories came up around the lake. The factories polluted the water with waste materials. The fish in the lake were finding it difficult to breathe.
A clever crane lived on a big banyan tree near the lake. It went to the fish and said, Dear fish, I know it has become difficult to live in this lake. The water is getting dirtier day by day. Very soon all of you will die. A few days ago I saw a very big lake nearby. The water is very clean and it is also full.
The fish were very happy to hear that. You will take us there!
But how can you take all of us? one fish asked. Others waited eagerly for the answer from the crane. The crane said, Yes, of course! I will take all of you. You are all my friends. I will take one by one to the other lake.
The fish felt happy. The crane took one fish in its beak. It showed a lake nearby and came back with the fish. The fish told his friends, It is really a nice lake.
