M iles Halter is the 16-year-old protagonist and gives the point-of-view of the story. He describes himself as approximately 6-feet-tall and skinny. He moves to a boarding school at a late age, much to the confusion and curiosity of his parents. Miles says that he wants attend a boarding school to seek a Great Perhaps, which is the saying of author Francois Rabelais that he read in his biography. He hasnt found or created any significant relationships in his hometown and school, and merely hangs out with the drama people and English geeks in the cafeteria because he sees it as a social necessity. Miles likes reading biographies, especially those of authors, even if he hasnt read any of their works. He also has a strange obsession with memorizing famous last words.

Miles grew up hearing stories about their shenanigans and adventures, although this wasnt entirely the reason why he had wanted to move. Miles describes Culver Creek as six buildings arranged in a hexagram around a large plot of grass. Hes roommates with Chip Martin, a short but muscular boy who amazes him when he names countries in a world map that Miles had put up. Chip later says that his talent is memorizing things, while Miles says that his talent is knowing a lot of last words by famous people. Chips nickname is Colonel.

She also explains how Chip got his nickname, the Colonel, by revealing how hes the military-style planner of their pranks, while she remained the creative force.
