Born in 1946 in Eupen, Belgium, he studied literature and sociology in Leuven, Aachen, and Paris. He was a journalist and reporter for a German daily newspaper in Brussels, later editorial journalist at the BRF, the Belgian broadcast and television station (among other things, as director for the BRF cultural program). He spent a sabbatical in the USA and was a guest auditor at the Lateran-University in Rome. Since 2007, he has been a freelance writer. He is also a member of the PEN Club.
In the German-speaking world, he became known through his publications about Pope Benedict XVI, the one who came on a bike and in an Alfa, as well as his biography about Father Anselm Grn. Further publications appeared in the German newspaper Die Zeit and the ARTE and ORF TV stations.
As a young man he was a candidate (postulant) in the monastery of Tibhirine and, therefore, knew the monks that were murdered. Jean-Pierre, the last survivor of the massacre, is a father-like friend to him.
Born in 1957 in Monza, Italy, Zanzoterra as a youth had great interest in Celtic culture. His first reports were about the Dublin of James Joyce and the Vikings on the Shetland Islands. In his old Peugeot 404, he undertook his first trip from France to Africa, from the Sahara desert to the Atlantic coast, and to the states in the Gulf of Guinea at the end of 1979. Since then he frequently spent time on the Black Continent. He repeatedly did photo reportages about African countries and their peoples. He is the cofounder of the Agency ParalleloZero in Milan, Italy, and contributor to numerous geographical and travel magazines, among them Geo, Focus, Figaro-Magazine, Airone, and Panorama Travel.
ABOUT THE TRAPPISTS
T HE MONASTIC ORDER OF THE TRAPPISTS IS THE RESULT OF several reform movements. It originated in the twelfth century in the French Abbey Cteaux (Burgundy). Rooted in the Benedictine order, the new branch spread all over Europe under the influence of Bernard of Clairvaux. After its demise in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the order whose monks called themselves Cistercians was reformed again, especially in 1662, under the guidance of Abbot Armand Jean de Ranc in the Abbey La Trappe (Normandy), from which the Trappists took their name. In the Catholic Church the order has had the name Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.) since 1903.
The reform of La Trappe was characterized by a strict life of prayer and work, silence, nightly wakes, and asceticism. The spiritual life of the order draws on the Bible, the Rule of St. Benedict of Nursia, as well as mystical writings of the early monks and Desert Fathers. Trappist cloisters usually are located in remote areas and are characterized by simplicity. The monastery currently has one hundred and two communities worldwide with 2,083 members. The seventy-four convents have altogether 1,735 sisters (as of 12/2010).
In Germany, in the Eifel area, there are Trappist monasteries in Mariawald and in Maria Frieden (women); the Austrian Trappist monks live in Engelszell. The members of the order wear a white habit with a black scapular and leather belt and, as choir habit, the white monk cowl. The most famous among them, later in the twentieth century, were the Sahara hermit Charles Foucauld, the American writer Thomas Merton, as well as the prior of the Algerian monastery Tibhirine, Christian de Cherg.
