You now hold the book Ive wanted to write since I spent a sleepless night on the twenty-first floor of St. Lukes Medical Center in 1989. After a traumatic car accident that gave me a glimpse of glory, morning sunrise signaled the first day of the rest of my life. But I wasnt ready to write it.
Friends and family had to convince me to tell that part of the story. They said it would help others. It still took me fourteen years to put that heavenly experience on paper. 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life chronicles my trip to heaven and my miraculous return to earth.
Since the publication of that first book, I have spoken worldwide and received thousands of e-mails, letters, and phone calls. I have heard countless personal testimonies. All of those responses have borne out the ministry of that book. During that time, I also introduced the subject dearest to my heart: I call it The New Normal. I can write about the new normal because I know with total certainty that heaven is real.
In the years following my accident, friends and relatives forced me to find a purposeful way to live after tragedy and loss. Many self-revelations about that journey appear in this booklessons on earthly joy learned from spending ninety minutes in heaven.
I have prayed and will continue to pray that this book will be as helpful to those seeking life after loss as others have found my first book. Heaven is real and we can go there someday. Until then, God wants us to experience a meaningful life on earth.
This heartfelt project would not have been possible without my gifted writing partner, Cecil Murphey. Cec is a dear friend and one of the premier wordsmiths of our time. And he knows intimately what it is like to live the new normal. Our agent, Deidre Knight, of the Knight Agency is a joy to both of us. From the beginning, she sensed that this project would touch many lives. Our editor, Denise Silvestro, tirelessly polished this manuscript to make sure that it does touch lives. Thank you, Cec, Deidre, and Denise, for your faith and support.
People from every corner of the globe have inspired me on my journey. Their encouragement has given me my new normal. My life has been blessed because of my daughter, Nicole; my sons, Chris and Joe; and my wife, Eva. I am privileged to have my parents, Billie and Ralph, and my in-laws, Eldon and Ethel Pentecost, support my journey.
I dedicate this book to those mentioned above and to everyone who has turned tragedies into testimonies, disappointments into divine appointments, desperation into inspiration, and losses into victories.
Heaven is real.

Heaven Is Real
I Cross the Bridge
Heaven is real. I know it because I have been there and back. As strange as that may sound, its true. As much as I can communicate with words, I want to share that experience and the aftermathespecially to write about the things I learned. The problem is that no one can explain an experience so perfectly that everyone can feel it exactly as it happened. I can only try.
My story began January 18, 1989.
Crossing the bridge over Lake Livingston, in Texas, changed my life forever. That was the day I died and went to heaven. It was not a near-death experience: I literally died. Two EMTs, and possibly as many as eight, examined my lifeless body and pronounced me dead after an eighteen-wheeler mangled my Ford Escort with me inside. Unable to get me out of the vehicle, they covered my car with a tarp.
After the impact, I didnt see light or float through a tunnel. I didnt undergo anything like what is described by those who have had a near-death experience (NDE). One second I was alive, and the next instant, I stood at the gates of heaven. I make a point of this because some people cant believe that any person could go to heaven and return (except Jesus). They insist I only had a near-death experience. I dont argue with them, but I know I died. I went to heaven and I experienced the awe, the joy, and the utter perfection of the life that awaits all of Gods people.
I do want to make a brief explanation about my death. First, one fact is irrefutable: I showed no signs of life for at least ninety minutes. Those with NDEs are out of their bodies for a few minutes at most; I was out for at least an hour and a half.
Human bodies contain about six quarts (5.6 liters) of blood. I had wounds all over my body. If it had been an NDE, my heart would have continued to pump blood. If I had not died, my heart would have continued to beat. In that case, I would have bled outmy heart would have pumped blood until I died.
Because I was killed instantly, my heart stopped beating, and therefore, it didnt pump blood. No blood gushed out because no heart pumped it. If my heart had continued to pump, I would have lost so much blood that no matter what they did to try to save me, it would have made no difference because there would have been no way to replace that much fluid.
