dedicate
To my wonderful husband, Chris, who all but starves every time I go fluttering off on a creative endeavor. Thank you for loving me and my quirky spirit. I will always catch the most fish, but the next Shock Top is on me.
acknowledge
To my beautiful mom, who celebrates all that I do, however big or small. Welcome home and thank you for keeping track of this book in Excel you definitely saved some of my brain cells. I hope you know how amazing I think you are.
To my charming Aunt Linda, who couldn't wait to see the next page. Your enthusiasm is like a garden in full bloom.
To my ber cool Uncle Fred, who never falls short on a good movie suggestion. Dude, The Hangover was hilarious, but why was the chicken in the hotel room?
To Jo and Tony, always ready with a kind word and so much encouragement.
To every woman who has ever heard the words, You have cancer. You are stronger than you think and braver than you know. I will never stop walking for you.
thank
To Christine Doyle and Kristin Boys, two of the most patient and helpful editors I could ever have the pleasure of working with. And to Corrie Schaffeld, who got it and listened with his mouse.
To Tricia and Lovely, whose mad photography skills made so many of my pages shine.
To Marla, who talked me off the ledge for six months. Hey, open that window back up, would ya?
To Stephanie, who never failed to provide me with a page idea, especially when the inspiration was running a bit thin. Thanks for the grub, Doc.
To Grill, who continues to make me laugh so hard that I quite possibly need to consider wearing Depends.
To Jean, a friend in all the best ways.
To all the friends and fans of PageMaps. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Remember, you are the authors of the journey of your lives. Every story is worthy of a scrapbook page.
Introduction
If you're anything like me when you shop for scrapbooking supplies, you choose papers and embellishments that you like. If a certain pattern blows my skirt, I grab it and maybe everything that coordinates with it. When I discover some cool, new doodad, into my basket it goes. I'm often impulsive, not always sure what I'll use that awesome piece of paper for, but I buy it on speculation. I check out, come home and spill out the contents of my retail therapy. There sits a pile of scrapbooking goodness, yearning to be used. This is when I used to get overwhelmed, staring at the pile in a game of Who Will Blink First. I always lost, darn it, until I discovered the benefits of a sketch.
Think of a sketch as another tool in your scrapbooking arsenal. Like a map, everything is drawn out for you, leaving you to the fun task of choosing photos, papers and embellishments. Sketches, which I call PageMaps, are handy when you are pressed for time or don't want to overthink the design of a layout. They are especially helpful when your muse decides to call in sick (but you know darn well that she's at the beach with her friends). They are practical, versatile tools, and they don't even require batteries.
In this book, you will find PageMaps for layouts (both paper and digital), greeting cards and mixed-media art 92 fresh, inspiring ways to tell your story, surprise a friend with a handmade card, create mini-albums for grandma and transform many nontraditional surfaces into works of art for your home. In the back of the book is a collection of 64 laminated cards. Each card includes a sketch, sample artwork and suggestions for materials to try. These handy reference cards are conveniently predrilled and ready to be slipped onto a key ring.
