She is the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Scrapbooking and, more recently, the coauthor of The Organized and Inspired Scrapbooker. Smedley, who calls Utah home, has been a frequent guest host for the PBS TV show, Scrapbook Memories and is a certified veteran of industrial retail trade shows. Dedication
I appreciate my mom's oldest sister, Virgie Day, for leading the way in uncovering our family history and instilling in my mom, Patsy, the idea that you can accomplish anything with determination and hard work.
Additional acknowledgments go to: My parents, for their collective example of unwavering honesty.
My husband, Kent, and five sons, for providing me with both material and inspiration for my scrapbooking projects and for tolerating my photo-taking whims and crafting messes.
My circle of friends. Thank you for your support and words of encouragement.
My brother, Shawn, for pushing me to examine different perspectives and cultures, and encouraging my quest for knowledge.
And thanks to all of the gifted staff at F+W Media who have lent their expertise to this book.
Acknowledgments
To my friends and colleagues in the scrapbooking industry whose relationships I value. This is my way of growing and supporting this industry I love.
To scrapbookers all over the world who have befriended me and shared their stories with not only me but the world.
To anyone who has ever endeavored to chronicle, in any form, the great adventure that is life.
And finally, this book is dedicated to you, the reader. Let me commend you for your willingness to give this hobby a chance, and congratulations to you for trying something new. Now get busy!

Welcome to Scrapbooking!
What is this hobby you have heard so much about? Why does it matter? And what is all the fuss about?
Well, scrapbooking is a blend of crafting and storytelling, photography and love that turns ordinary photos and words into a manifestation of your life. It's time well spent creating, sharing stories and preserving your memories.
If you've picked up this book, you're no doubt interested in doing something with your photos. Like most of us, you probably have thousands of photos (some in boxes, but most stored on your hard drive), which is driving your motivation to scrapbook. The good news is that you don't have to (and really shouldn't) scrap every photo. Scrapbooking provides a creative outlet for organizing and focusing on recording specific memories and what kinds of memories to document is completely up to you. In fact, one of the best things about scrapbooking is that there are very few rules. Why you scrapbook, what topics you cover and how you complete the process is up to you. Everyone can follow her own individual scrapbook journey.
Start Scrapbooking is your guide to getting started in this wonderful craft. Inside these pages, I'll help you determine your goals for scrapbooking and how you will go about accomplishing them. I'll show you all the tools you'll need to have and the products to have fun with, and teach you how to use them. You'll learn the basics of telling your story and how to effectively convey those stories using basic design principles. Finally, I'll give you a gallery of layouts organized by theme to get you started on your way. As you flip through the book the first time, look at the visuals and get excited, then start at the beginning and read, take notes, think about the content and be ready to join the world of scrapbookers in celebrating life on paper.
Welcome to the world of scrapbooking, a place where ordinary photos and words become extraordinary symbols of your life.
