Preface

NO MATH IN LIFE, NO TASTE IN LIFE

Having had a particular interest in Mathematics since my childhood, I honed my fundamentals by practicing them repeatedly throughout my high school. Getting into the higher secondary, I had more advanced levels of Mathematics to face, which showed me a new dimension to explore into. I excelled at that, performing consistently well over the years, which I maintained even after enrolling myself into the B.Tech programme. Mathematics is the most interesting subject. It is only up to the readers how they visualize this subject.

Various famous personalities had spend their time in Studying Mathematics. Even the bookshelf of Prof. Albert Einstein was stacked with books on Mathematical games and puzzles. There are various puzzles of Albert Einstein which are more entertaining and difficult to solve. Only genius minds can solve the puzzles of Albert Einstein.

I am sure that you will definitely enjoy in solving the puzzles that I am posing in the following pages. Some of the puzzles are related to our daily life while some are related to your imagination. So open your mind and start enjoying puzzles.

Its not enough to have a good mind, the main thing is to use it well

1. A Piece of Bread

There are four friends: Ramesh, Suresh, Aman and Raman. They have a square piece of bread (4x4) and t be the thickness of the bread.

Ramesh, Suresh and Aman can together finish the bread in 150/31 seconds.

Ramesh, Suresh and Raman can together finish the bread in 120/23 seconds while Ramesh, Aman and Raman can finish it in 200/33 seconds also Suresh, Aman and Raman can finish the same in 600/79 seconds.

If all the four friends have different capacities, find the time taken by them to finish the same piece of bread if all of them eat together.

2. The game of Numbers

Write seven times seven to get Eight Hundred and Sixty Eight.

3. Magical Mathematical Operator

It is the well-known fact that if zero is multiplied by any number, it becomes zero. Write five times zero (only zero) and any mathematical operator of your choice to get a non-zero number 8.

4. Counter Strike

During my B. Tech. Counter strike was my favorite game. I always used to play this game on LAN with my friends. One day, I was playing with three of my friends, one of them is with me in counter terrorist team and the other two are in terrorist team. In the middle of the game, I observed that I have killed 100 Terrorists and my teammate killed 80 Terrorists while the other two in the terrorist team have killed 80 and 40 Counter Terrorists respectively.

Find the total number of matches played by us if it is known that out of the total number of matches we won, in twenty matches only I survived and my team mate was killed and in 10 matches only my team mate was survived and I was killed while in rest winning matches we both survived.

5. An Electric Geyser

An electric geyser of capacity 18 liters boils water at a rate of 2 liters per minute and water comes out from the tap at a volumetric flow rate of 1 liter per minute.

Rohan opens the tap to collect 10 liters of hot water for cleaning his car. As soon as he closed the tap just after two minutes, his maid opens the tap and collects 5 liters of water for washing some clothes.

Find the amount of water (in liters) left in the geyser at the end. Assuming that initially geyser contains 18 liters of hot water and the switch of geyser is opened at all times.

6. Ten Dollar note

While walking through the Cavendish Street in the morning, a man found a $10 note. After coming home he gave the note to his son as his pocket money. His son has taken ten dollars from his friend few days before so he returned the same note to his friend. His friend went to the shop to buy some snacks and handed over the note to the shopkeeper.

After coming home the shopkeeper was called on by plumber to collect his bill and the shopkeeper handed that ten dollar note to the plumber.

Plumber handed the note to his wife to purchase same household products.

His wife went to the shop and buys some goods which costs her ten dollar and she handed the same note to the man in the shop.

The man in the shop is one who finds the note in the morning from the street. After careful examination he found the note is counterfeit. How much is the loss and profit in the whole transaction and by whom?

7. A Matter of Time

Rama went to her friends home in the evening. As she has to reach home back by 6 p.m, she asked from her friend-How many minutes is it until 6 oclock?

Being good in Mathematics, Ramas friend told her time in this way- 90 minutes ago if it was five times as many minutes past 12 oclock, you can get how many minutes is it until 6 oclock.

What is the time now?

8. Gold coins

A rich man has collected many gold coins, he never wants anybody to know about that. One day his wife came to know that he has some gold coins. She was eager to know the number of gold coins so she asked from her husband. Her husband gets perplexed whether to tell her or not and finally he replied in such a way- If I divide the coins into two unequal numbers, hundred times the difference of the two numbers is equal to the difference of the squares of the two numbers.

After listening to her husband she started calculating the number of coins that they had. Find how many coins they have?

9. Three Sisters

Marie has three daughters. The age of the eldest one is thrice the age of youngest and the age of the middle one is twice the age of youngest. If the sum of their ages is equal to the square of the age of youngest one, find the difference between the eldest and the youngest ones.

10. Profit or Loss

A friend of mine borrows a second hand motor vehicle for Rs. 11000. Later he didnt find it that much useful so he sold it to his friend at Rs. 12000. But he realized that he had not done well with his friend and decided to get back. So he offered Rs. 13000 to his friend for the same vehicle and get back. As the vehicle is not useful for him, so he sold it at the auction for Rs. 15000.

Find how much is the profit or loss to him?

11. Broken Car

A group of people went for a picnic to Shimla. In the midway, they found that 5 cars run out of petrol so they decided to leave the cars at the same place and continue their journey by adjusting one more person on each car. After having fun in Shimla they decided to come back and found that ten more cars are not in running condition. In order to reach home, it becomes necessary for each car to carry three more persons than they started their journey. Find how many persons went for the picnic.
