This volume, first published in 1973, brings together a wide range of Professor Landaus work on recent Middle Eastern history and politics, reflecting the breadth of the authors concern and research. The first section deals with aspects of political organisation in the Middle East, largely Egypt, towards the end of the nineteenth century. A little-known plan of the Islamic reformer al-Afghani is discussed, showing him in a rather more political light than the religious haze which normally surrounds this pan-Islamic campaigner. The role of the influential secret societies in modern Egypt is outlined, and the politics behind the fluctuations in the degree of responsibility allowed to Egyptian ministers is examined. This section is concluded by a chapter on two proposals for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in the Sudan in the early days of Zionism, throwing interesting light on the differing aims of early Zionists and alternative historical paths that might have been taken. The second section of the book contains studies on the Jewish situation in nineteenth-century Egypt, focusing on their position within the larger Muslim society and on socio-economic factors, as well as on the career of James Sanua (Abu Naddara), an Egyptian Jew who played a prominent part in nationalist agitation. The two final parts of the book turn to recent and contemporary electoral politics in the Middle East, with special attention being paid to the political leadership and voting behaviour of the Arabs in Israel. Other studies deal with elections in Lebanon and Turkey, and the final chapter analyses the militant right-wing elements in the Turkish political spectrum.

This volume comprises thirteen papers, divided into four main groups. They are all concerned with Middle Eastern history and politics during the last hundred years. While most discuss Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey, several touch on more general issues, such as Pan-Islam and Pan-Turkism, or parliamentary elections and political leadership.
Of these papers, the last one, 'The Militant Right in Turkish Polities', appears for the first time, as does the list of publications immediately following it. The others have been published, over the years 1952 to 1970, in various journals and specialized works. They are reproduced here without material changes, except for corrections in matters of detail. Three of the papers, however, have been translated into English especially for this volume: nos. 4 and 5 from the Hebrew, and no. 10 from the French.
Thanks are due to publishers and editors for permission to reprint the essays in the present collection; such permission is acknowledged in the first footnote to each paper.

Jerusalem, December 1972.
Notwithstanding the fact that considerable research work has been done into Jaml al-Dn al-Afghn's personality and activities, little is known about his practical moves towards bringing about political union between the various Muslim countries in a common effort against their foes.
Al-Afghn's activities consisted mainly of the propaganda he disseminatedboth by pen and word of mouthin order to awaken some feeling of self-assurance in the various Muslim peoples; and also in inculcating the idea that strong connections still existed among them, by virtue of their common religion. These two closely interrelated aims, spurred by bitter anti-foreign, and particularly anti-British agitation, were easily recognizable in his teachings in various lands as well as in his al-Radd 'all-dahriyyn and his several other works.
Although it seemed outwardly that al-Afghn was a most pious man, with the highest regard for religion in general, and for the Muslim faith in particular, this held true only when he was addressing his co-religionists. He frankly abandoned this attitude in his famous debate with Ernest Renan about the relation of Islam to the progress of civilization. Al-Afghn stated clearly then that the Muslim religion had tried to stifle the progress of science, and that he hoped Muslim society would succeed in breaking its fetters.
His agitation and intrigues in Western Europe at that time, which
Moreover, his alert mind was scheming ceaselessly, hoping to find a political plan for bringing all, or most, Muslims together. In 1884, he had advocated the union of the Persians with the Afghans against foreign (European) intrusion, in an article named Da'wat al-Furs il'l-ittid ma' al-Afghn, published in al-'Urwa al-Wuthq. However, well knowing that he was distrusted by the British, al-Afghn could hardly have expected them to act on his advice. In the years following he seems to have devised other schemes on the same lines, but he hardly ever elaborated them. His most painstakingly thought-out project, indeed the only one whose exact details are known to us, was that which he presented to the Sultan in 1892.
It is more than likely that the invitation extended to him later in 1892 was a consequence of the presentation of the said project. It has been stated, but not yet proved, that al-Afghn served the Sultan's Pan-Islamic purposes, from his arrival in Constantinople until his death in 1897, perhaps sending emissaries and letters in the Sultan's name to Persia, Afghanistan and India. Such employment is understandable not only in the light of al-Afghn's previous political and religious agitation, but also as a result of the submission of his elaborate project to the Sultan.
