Nikhil Pawa

Writing and editing a book is never an easy task without the support of those close to you, from both personal and working lives. Thank you in particular must go to my parents and partner Nada, as well as my dear friends and colleagues.

Paul Cathcart

To my wonderful wife,

Thank you for your support and understanding for all the time I spent away from you during the writing and editing of this book.

Howard Tribe

Finally, we thank all the contributors for their input, the editorial team, especially Amy Rodriguez and Alice Oven at Taylor & Francis, for the opportunity to write this book and Viswanath Prasanna for his close attention to detail during the final edits.

It is always a challenge to know the best way to revise and practice for an exam so that you are as prepared as you can possibly be. Any examination requires careful preparation, background reading and prior self-assessment to ensure success. During our surgical careers, we have found that it is often difficult to dedicate hours on end reading large surgical textbooks in preparation for exams. There is no doubt that these textbooks should form the basis of your quality revision, but often we found that answering revision questions during the working day or during or after a night shift was the best way to increase the amount of quality exam preparation when there are only a few spare minutes. Questions in such format can be a valuable resource in comparison to pay-per-view internet questions.

Our aim with this book is, therefore, to provide you with a useful revision tool. Each question is accompanied by a detailed answer together with a road map highlighting important topics within the syllabus. The questions may also be used secondarily as a self-assessment tool prior to the exam.

Nikhil Pawa qualified in 2002 and expanded his academic interest by successfully completing a Masters in Medical Law (LLM with Merit), MSc in surgical technology and MD (Research) from the University of Kent, Kent, UK, in 2004, and a further MSc in surgical technology from Imperial College London in 2008. Having completed his basic surgical training in Nottingham, Nikhil completed an MD (research) investigating serum-based biomarkers for colorectal cancer. He is currently a higher general surgical trainee on the North West London rotation. Nikhil has a keen interest in medical education and has been regularly involved in courses associated with the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine.

Paul Cathcart qualified from Imperial College London in 2006 with a BSc in endocrinology. He successfully completed the MRCS in 2009 and subsequently obtained a general surgical training number in the East of England Deanery. In 2015, Paul successfully completed a master of laws from Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He is currently undertaking an MRC-funded PhD research project under Professor Stebbing at Imperial College London. Paul has a keen interest in medical education and regularly teaches medical students at the Royal Society of Medicine in preparation for their OSCE examinations, and also acts as an advanced trauma life support instructor.
