Gerry Faust won more hearts than games. He came to Notre Dame as the mythical high school coach from Cincinnatis Moeller High School, such a perfect fit for Notre Dame that it seemed almost too good to be true. It was. Faust admits his mistakes, which include the manner in which he put together his first coaching staff, changing Notre Dames offense, even feeling sorry for himself. He explains how he could beat Southern Cal, but not Air Force and Purdue.

Acknowledgments
The authors offer their heartfelt thanks to the following persons who relieved good times and bad for the sake of The Golden Dream:
From the Notre Dame years: Father Edmund P. Joyce, Father James Riehle, Brian Boulac, Bob Crable, Gene Corrigan, Art Decio, John Heisler, Roger Valdiserri and Mike Leep.
And from the Akron years, where truths were seldom close to the surface and not always without pain: Dr. William V. Muse, Dave Adams, Jim Dennison, Ray Meyo, Bill Greenzalis, Ralph Staub, Rudy Sharkey and Bob LaCivita.
In a category by themselves are two persons who shared all the years and have heard all the stories before, because they were part of most of them: Marlene Faust, wife and friend, and Ken Schneider, attorney and friend.
For their support, their patience and their assistance in the editorial process, the authors, singularly or together, owe a debt of gratitude to the following persons: Jacquelyn B. Love, Karen Heisler, Ken Krause, Father Edmund P.Joyce, John Heisler, Ted Mallo, Marion Ruebel and, most of all, Ray Meyo. Whatever is right about The Golden Dream, they made it so. Whatever is wrong is no fault of theirs.

Foreword
Every Notre Dame fan remembers the story. How a high school football coach had a dream. How he got on his knees every day and prayed to the Blessed Mother for a chance to coach football at Notre Dame. Unheard of they said. A high school coach, even from powerful Moeller High in Cincinnati, would never get the job. But Gerry Faust kept praying and yes, miracles do happen, and one day he became the head coach of Notre Dame.
It is impossible not to like Gerry Faust. He bounds into your life and overwhelms you with good feelings. He always seems to be there on the campus, at the banquets, at practice, at the games. He is as much a part of Notre Dame as anyone I know. Sure, I wish his record was better. He does too. I remember sports publicity chief, Roger Valdiserri describing Faust's joy at getting the job. It was like a fairy tale come true. How he loved it. How he loved being a part of Notre Dame. It was such an exciting, heartwarming story. But today most of us only remember his record. Those five years. The 30 wins, 26 defeats, and one tie. It wasn't easy for him or for Notre Dame. The fans were restless. The alumni were grumbling. They kept hoping every year would be different. Unfortunately, it wasn't. If there ever was a story you wanted to have a happy ending, this was it. He was such a good guy. You hated the way it was coming down. And then one day it was over.
