When Ned Harkness enthusiastically predicted that Glen Falls New York, would become the Green Bay of Hockey, even his most ardent supporters had to wonder whether his hyperbole had any limits. Adirondack teams have won four Calder Cup playoffs titles and have been a finishing school for dozens of NHL players coaches, and executives, including Washington Capital Adam Oates.

Newspaper journalists have been told for decades: "You ought to write a book." With the help of a great many people, I was able to do just that. Topping my assist list:
Betty Stangle of Glens Falls and Sagamore Publishing for having confidence in me and providing the opportunity to write this book.
My friend and colleague Bob Dittmeier. He wore quite a few hats during this project: confidant, cheerleader, fact-checker, editor. It was an all-star performance.
Jim Gagliardi for his encouragement, getting several interviews, and parting with the 15 years of newspapers that cluttered his home and office.
Jack Hume and Denis Paquette of The Gazette Newspapers for permitting me to take on this assignment and to use Gazette photos.
Gale Brinkman and David Rawlin, who without much notice jumped in with some great photographs.
The Adirondack Red Wings Booster Club for loaning me its archives, compiled by club historian Jean Irwin.
The staff and players of the Adirondack Red Wings. A first-rate operation run by first-class people.
My parents, Herb and Aileen, for their love and support and showing how much can be accomplished through hard work.
Old friend Dick Bitely, who 20 years ago pointed me toward hockey, saying, "How can you watch basketball? It's so slow." Good call.

Foreword
The words were just out of my mouth, "It's great to be here in Glen Falls, New York" when Mayor Ed Bartholomew corrected me, "It's Glens Falls, not Glen Falls."
Oops. I didn't get myself off on the right foot at the Adirondack Red Wings press conference introducing me as the next head coach in July of 1983. I should have known better, because I wasn't a stranger. I had visited the Glens Falls-Lake George area several times during the previous 20 years, and for some reason the Adirondack region kept calling me back.
