TABLE OF CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION
Verb,n.Grammar. The key word in most sentences that reveals what ishappening. It can declare somethingShe looked, or ask a questionDidshe look? Good definition, but why say She looked, if she cangawk, spy, or examine? The familiar choice offers vague action, where thestronger selection gives action and expression.

Lets consider other examples. In place ofHe felt, use caressed, groped, fumbled. Why write Mary took when fetched, scooped, or heavedare better descriptions? The detective pushed doesnt show as much as thedetective rammed, elbowed, or propelled. If we didnt have verbs, where would a story go? Nowhere.Characters, animals, and nature cant be or do anything without averb. Characters cant laugh, animals cant attack, and trees cant sway in thebreeze. Verbs provide excitement, drive the narrative and paint a vivid picturein the readers mind.

Verbs also determine when something happens, in the present,in the past, or in the future. They set the tense of your tale. Here are someexamples: Present tense I/you/we/they drink he/she/itdrinks Past tense I/you/he/she/it/we/they drank Future tense I/you/he/she/it/we/they will drink Present perfect tense I/you/he/she/it/we/they havedrunk Past perfect tense I/you/he/she/it/we/they haddrunk Future perfect tense I/you/he/she/it/we/they willhave drunk Using Strong Verbs, Strong Voice, authors can quicklyreplace dull, and over used verbs, giving their stories more punch and verve.Remember, you can add an s/es/ing/ed OR remove ed depending on the tenseyoure using. In rough/first drafts, I use common verbs. Once Im donewith my manuscript, I take chapter by chapter, and do a word search replacingthem with stronger choices. ONE LAST THING For years, I gave part of this list as a hand-out when Ispoke to writers groups.

Ive received many emails stating how thesubstitutions proved helpful to recipients. This book is meant as a startingpoint for using more colorful and active verbs. I hope STRONG VERBS; STRONGVOICE will become one of your favorite resources.
