The idea for writing this book came to me in the fall of 2007, after a particular teaching course that I wanted to attend was unexpectedly cancelled. After it became apparent that no other teaching courses were on the horizon, I decided to write a book about the Bach Flower Remedies instead and the information would be out there for all who wanted it.
I began writing the book in September 2008, working on it in stops and starts. Life got in the way with distractions, and then I started to put hurdles up in front of myself. On October 1, 2009, after taking various remedies and other holistic help, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel for my book. I simply decided to write and it would happen, and that it would be ready to take to England for Christmas.
From writing this book I have learned a lot about the remedies and about myself. I am continuing on my Bach Flower journey and self-healing. I hope that the peoples lives that I have touched and guided with the Bach Flowers are a bit better because of it.
The intent of this book is to be a reference guide giving practical advice on all aspects of the Bach Flower Remedies,* for their everyday use for people and pets alike. Dr. Bach created a simple system of self-healing, and that is what I hope to get across, from a unique fresh reflective perspective.
About Dr. Edward Bach
They cure, not by attacking the disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of which, disease melts away as snow in the sunshine. There is no true healing unless there is a change in outlook, peace of mind and inner happiness. Dr. Edward Bach 1934. Howard, J. and Ramsell, J . The Original Writings of Edward Bach.
Dr. Edward Bach was born on September 24, 1886 in Moseley England. From 1906-1912 he studied medicine at the University College Hospital in London and trained as a doctor. By 1922 Dr. Bach worked in a general practice out of consulting rooms in Harley Street, having also studied bacteriology, immunology, and homeopathy during his career.
Over time, he realized that people reacted differently to illnesses, so he wanted to treat the person as a whole rather than what they were suffering from. Dr. Bach became dissatisfied with orthodox medicine and was convinced there must be a system of healing based purely in nature. So in 1930 he gave up his lucrative Harley Street Practice and left London, determined to devote his time to a new system that surely could be found in nature.
Relying on intuition and his natural gifts as a healer to guide him, he spent many years searching for and developing his system from non-poisonous plants and flowers. Gradually, one by one, these were found to assist with a particular emotion or mental state.
For several years he spent the summers searching for and preparing the remedies, and winters helping patients. In 1934, Dr. Bach moved to Sotwell in Oxfordshire, where he lived in a small house called Mount Vernon. There he created a centre for his work, discovering the remaining remedies to complete the series in the garden and surrounding countryside.
After the discovery of the 38 remedies in 1936, Dr. Bach announced his work was complete. On his 50 th birthday, September 24 th , 1936, he published his final works and gave his first public lecture, entitled Healing by Herbs, at the Masonic Lodge in Wallingford.
He died on November 27 of that year, knowing that he had completed his work by devising a simple self-help form of healing covering all aspects of human natures moods. His system is now available and used in most parts of the world.
Mount Vernon is now the Bach Centre and his trustees still collect and prepare the plants for the Mother Tinctures in the same simple way as Dr. Bach intended.
The Bach system is made up of 38 healing plants addressing the different states of mind. The remedies help the physical body to gain strength and assist the mind to become calm, widen its outlook, and strive towards perfection, thus bringing peace and harmony to the whole personality.
Dr. Bachs philosophy:
A healthy mind is the key to recovery, and the remedies work by gently restoring balance to negative emotions
The key is to cure the personality, because different personality types react to illness and cope with it in different ways. The remedies deal with the personalities i.e. treating the patient and not the disease
Everyone has a purpose in life, but often gets lost on the way. The remedies help us to become our true selves and to rediscover our true purpose in life. Health and true healing would soon follow
Dr. Bach intended his system to be a simple self-help measure available to people from all walks of life
Questions and Answers about the Bach Flower Remedies
How are the remedies made?
The flowers of the plants, trees, and bushes used are mainly found in the garden at the Bach Centre and in the surrounding countryside. Many of the locations are the ones that Dr. Bach himself used.
The Sun Method is used for the more delicate flowers that bloom in the height of the summer. The flowers are carefully picked and then placed in a glass bowl of spring water. They are left floating on top of the water in the direct sunlight for three hours.
For the woodier, hardier plants and flowers that bloom later in the year when the sun is not so strong, the Boiling Method is used. The plants and flowers are placed in a saucepan and boiled for half an hour, and then taken outside to cool.
