This stimulating book examines the experience of women artists in the American West. The women studied here range from Joseppa Dick, Pomo basketmaker, to Georgia OKeeffe; from dancer Isadora Duncan to African-American writer Ntozake Shange and dozens of other women who lived in a fertile crescent that Jensen calls the Pacific Southwest during the last century.By recovering the work of so many writers, painters, photographers, and craftswomen, Jensen expands the history of women in the West. She also explores the cultural climate necessary to support creative work and considers questions of tradition and memory, examining the forms available to writers such as Buffalo Bird Woman, Christine Quintasket, Ruth Benedict, Sui Sin Far, and Agnes Smedley. Finally she engages the theories of history and creativity that determine what society chooses to remember and preserve.

PREFACE
This book is the outgrowth of a series of four talks I gave for the Calvin P. Horn Lectures in Western History and Culture at the University of New Mexico in November 1991. After the first talk I had the chance to talk to Calvin Horn about his publishing ventures in western history. I was enormously impressed by his dedication to western history and by his contributions to that history through his many publications as well as his sponsorship of this lecture series. I thank him for that support.
Many other people also helped make possible the Horn Lectures on Women in the Modern West. Dick Etulain invited me to speak on women in the twentieth century West. He did not say which women or which West he had in mind. I know a lot of the new western women's history because I have read much of it and because I am one of a number of historians who wanted to replace the older image of western women of a decade agomainly Anglo pioneers and prostitutes-with a new multicultural image, and to rewrite western history with women at the center. Others, not I, have done most of the work in creating this new western women's history, but I suppose Dick thought I would bring some sort of synthesis of this work to the lectures.
I began this research on western women by reading the work not only of historians, but of folklorists, American Studies experts, anthropologists, ethnologists, literary experts, art historians, women's studies scholars, and others. Despite the richness and variety of those works, I still lacked a focus. The more I read about the arts created by western women, the more the women disappeared because I had no single pat-

tern within which they could move. There seemed to be a lot of creative women in the West, but no pattern to explain their lives. At first I looked for a center around which to create a pattern. Soon I realized that rather than centering the patterns that were emerging among the western women I was coming to know, I must strike out in a new direction, allowing a number of patterns to come together without a center but with many borders.
