Zero Balancing: Conscious Touch and Transformation is a multi-faceted yet very personal book. Jim McCormick articulates the fundamental principles of Zero Balancing, illustrating them with relevant case histories. While doing this he additionally describes the actual underlying processes of performing a Zero Balancing session. The book then becomes personal as he shares his own feelings, struggles and thoughts that occur for him during the performance of sessions. This personal flavor along with the multiple case reviews provides the reader with doorways for their own growth and transformation. I know I had a number of moments as I read Jims book when I felt I was not only understanding the theory and process of ZB but was actually getting a session. I believe any Zero Balancing practitioner will gain meaningful insights from reading Zero Balancing: Conscious Touch and Transformation, and that any non-Zero Balancer will want a ZB session.

In this fascinating book, James McCormick documents the wide range of transformative experiences that can emerge from a Zero Balancing session. I believe part of the reason for this variety is that every person presents with their own unique history of physical, emotional, and/or spiritual traumas. The overriding message is that these traumas compromise both body structure and energetics and can be resolved through this remarkably gentle process. By bringing physical and psycho-spiritual lives into harmony, a person is left with nothing but their own personal inner comfort. For me, Zero Balancing took me to a state of total bliss; a new and unanticipated experience. I realized that this is a rare state most of us go through our lives without knowing the possibility that such a wonderful inner state even exists. It is delicious when it happens. Practitioners from every modality and from every level of expertise will find inspiration in the experiences and insights James documents here. For those who have yet to experience Zero Balancing, the book will give you insights about this remarkably effective method of feeling completely at home.

Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

In March 2016, Dr Fritz Smith, came to the Boston area to teach a new class he had just created, called Zero Balancing and Consciousness. Fritz, at 92, is still actively teaching and learning. This particular class was about how to work with consciousness through Zero Balancing. That is, how to help guide the client into deeper, altered states of consciousness where more change is possible, not only in her body but also in her awareness. The session I describe below happened in my office a day after that class.

Ella works in corporate America and has received ZB sessions for several years. She has also taken a number of ZB classes herself. She receives ZB from me every few months. Her goal for this session was, I just want to have a wonderful ZB session without limiting the possibilities by having some specific want. Sometimes we say to a client, Lets have a session that serves your highest good, without needing to be specific about what that would be, and trusting that it can happen. Her wish was similar to that idea.

I used some of the fulcrums that Fritz had just taught to help move her into an altered state of consciousness, where she could become more connected to her deepest core self. (We use the word fulcrum in Zero Balancing to mean any time we touch the body. We create a fulcrum in many ways, such as lifting, bending, pulling, twisting or compressing. The fulcrum is designed to make a change in the clients system.)

Often when a client has gone to a deep state quickly, there is the possibility of overload of doing more than the person can integrate easily or well. In this case I decided it was safe to do as much as Ella could tolerate, and to watch her carefully to make sure I didnt overdo it. This is always a clinical judgment, but Ella is experienced with Zero Balancing, and I was confident that she would respond well to stronger work. It turned out that Ella was fine with it all, continuing to have full, deep breaths and to get quieter in her body, and yet also feeling more alive. Ellas bones and the soft tissues literally felt livelier, more elastic, and more vibrant, and similarly her energetic field became more lively and sparkly. And in between these movements she would have periods of extreme stillness, her body not moving while her energetic field grew quieter and quieter.
