This is a story about a young black girl who was adopted by a nice white family who wanted to make a difference in this young girl life. They lived in a all white community, attended and all white church, and had zero black friends, they thought that love was enough but as Kirah starts to notice the difference in the way she was being treated by her siblings, adopted grandparents and others in the community she began to have questions that her parents did not have the answers to, this is part one of Kirah stories as she began her journey throughout her life.
To all foster and Adoptive Parents I think this is a must read to understand that if you foster or adopt children of another race this book will help prepare you so that you may meet the needs of children of another race.
Oh Lord, please hear my prayer, I am sometimes confused by all the things that have happened to me. Help me understand why I have been put in this position. God help my parents to be patient with me. Let them know I am happy to be with them and to have a place to call home. I just sometimes have questions about who I look like and where I came from, Lord help us all in Jesus name. Amen.
Kirah woke up to a beautiful morning. She heard the birds in her room chirping so she quickly got out of bed and removed the cloth that was covering the bird cage and they started to sing to each other as if they waited all night to do so.
Kirahs mother Chelsea came into the room with a big smile on her face like every morning saying. Good morning sleeping beauty.
I am happy to see you get up finally your sisters have eaten and are already outside in the backyard playing. Its time for you to join them, Kirah smile turned into a frown she did not want to play with her sisters they did not always treat her right.
Just as her mom turned to look at Kirah she notice she was no longer smiling but she was frowning, and she asked her if something was wrong, Kirah looked up at her mom and seen the concern and love in her face and she quickly ran to her mom and said I love you mom so very much and her mom returned her hug saying I love you to the moon and back and Kirah forgot all about why she was frowning.
Chelsea, Kirahs mom announce that that they were going to the playground and all the girls jump up yelling and clapping their hands because they always had fun on the playground and Kirah always had someone else to play with other than her sisters so she was really super excited to be going.
Then her mom also said that when they left the playground they would be going to the grandparents for a while because mom had several things she needed to do today, that last part Kirah was not happy about she was not sure how she felt about her grandparents.
Kirah just knew that when she went to visit them they would not allow her to play outside because they told her that it was too hot for her and the sun would make her darker and she did not need to get any darker, but they always let her sisters go because they had sunscreen that would protect her sisters but they did not make sunscreen for dark girls like her. Kirah did not dare ask why was that instead she would just bite the inside of her cheek to keep from saying anything or her grandparents would start over telling her again how lucky she was to have been adopted by her parents, she did what she always did sat at the kitchen table and color until her mom came to get her.
As they got to the playground Kirah spotted her friends and took off running toward them, and they were just as happy to see her, and after playing for some time Kirah friend Nikki asked if she would like to come and spend the night with her on her birthday next Saturday she was having a sleep over birthday party Kirah was so excited to be invited she asked if her sisters could come as well and she said yes if they want too.
Kirah quickly ran over to her mom with her friend and her ask her mom if she could but her mom said she was sorry but she would not be able to come that they had other plans for that night, all the girls were so hurt because they really wanted her to come Then her mom said run alone now we only have a few minutes then we are leaving.
As the children were hugging goodbye Sasha said to Kirah that she and Denise both were being transferred out of that school because they were moving and that she hope that she learns to stand up for herself sense they will not be there to protect her from the bullies, Kirah hugged her friends and said I dont want you to go and all the children started to cry K irah her mom shouted lets go.! So she said goodbye to her friends and left.
Kirah was not worried about the bullying because even when her friends were not around her sisters even though they were often mean to her they would not let anyone else bother her. Kirah often thought that was strange because they bullied her all the time.
While driving to grandmother house mom ask Kirah asked her mom if they could talk about her friends coming to spend the night with her sometime since she cant go to their house, she said no honey you have your sisters to play with that should be enough Kirah said but they are my friends and you let their friends come over why not mind because I said so those girls are trouble I can see it by looking at them, but mom we are done talking about this you are not going to their house and they are not coming to ours end of story. Kirah then look at her sisters and for the first time ever they said sorry Kirah we will play with you more.
Kirah started to think about some of the things her friends have said to her like their mom said that her hair look bad all the time because she had a white mom and she did not know how to take care of it and that her mom should ask her mom about how to fix her hair. And she also was wondering why her family even adopted her if they did not want her to be around black people after all she was black, she also started to think that it seems that people always leave her. Her birth parents, now her friends maybe something was wrong with her.
