"Lucia," Jack said, his voice reflecting none of the things she had seen for an instant in his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
She lowered the lantern and stepped closer. He took a step back, as if in fear, then caught himself and straightened, looking her square in the eye and raising one black eyebrow. She fought the shiver of awareness his too familiar expression brought her. She might be dead, but she wasn't that dead. She wanted him still, despite everything.
Her gaze skittered over, then away from, a nearby gravestone. She wasn't ready to look at the name on that stone. Not yet. Perhaps not ever. But she had not come here for that. She had come here for Jack.
Lucia pulled the cloak tighter about her neck, the October dawn as chill as her blood. "We have one day to view the wrongs of a lifetime. If you do not wish to carry this cursed lantern about for eternity, we had best be on our way." She placed the lantern at Jack's feet. "Here you will find it waiting for you when midnight comes. If the lantern's light glows, you will live again. If the flame has died, so have you."

Chapter One
"Green, get in here." His editor's voice squawked out through the speaker phone just as Cameron Green was pulling up his story on the latest fortune-telling scheme in the Bronx.
Cameron smiled grimly at the glowing green computer screen. He had put several weeks into this story, and it was satisfying to see the facts match like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
"Cameron!"
"Coming." He straightened his silk tie and shrugged into the suit coat he had hung on the back of his chair. He checked for his tiny tape recorder with a practiced pat over his breast pocket. Clipping his silver pen in the pocket of his starched button-down shirt, he turned out of his cubicle and strode down the office corridor.
"Good morning, Julie."

The editor-in-chief of the Daily Express pushed her glasses up on her forehead and frowned. "No, Cam, it is not a good morning." Julia Francis Jones sent a frosty gray-eyed glare directly into Cam's heart. "Sit. I told you to go on vacation. Why are you here?"
"Well, I had the fortune-telling scam story working and..."
"Garcia could have picked up on that."
Cam leapt out of his chair. "No, he couldn't. It's my story and I'm the one who has to finish it."
Julie held out her hands palms up. "Cam, this is just an example of what I am talking about. Your temper's shot. You have been bordering on the edge of obsession since your father passed on. You have got to back away for awhile and regain your objectivity."
"Objectivity? I'm the best writer you have on staff. I'm as objective as they come, and darn good too. I have that other thing, that Santeria priest business, almost wrapped. And the psychic-network expos. I can't leave now. There's no one else my sources will trust."
"I see." Julie tapped her pencil on her desk, giving Cam time to regain his composure. "Let's just review this conversation." An increasingly uncomfortable pause stretched out between them.
"As I see it, you have appointed yourself a watchdog for the paranormal. This is not 'The X Files,' Cam. As of now you are off anything you are working on at your desk. You can select who you want to wrap it for you." She snapped the pencil on the desk like a shot, punctuating the tense atmosphere in the office.
