Were ready, said Sally, to go trick-or-treat! Lets start with the houses right here on our street. Not yet, said Nick.
My mom said we cant go till she finishes work in an hour or so. Wait to go trick-or-treat? Oh, we cannot do that. Lets leave right away! said the Cat in the Hat. Should we trick and then treat? Or treat and then trick? We need Halloween goodies for Sally and Nick! We must go to the Forest of Splish-Splosh-a-Ree, where my friend Benny lives way up high in a tree. Does he go trick-or-treating like we do? asked Nick. Hello! Benny called. Hello! Benny called.
Here I am! Look at me! Im all the way up in the top of this tree. Here is my trick and for me its a breeze. I hold on to branches and swing through the trees. Nice trick! said the Cat. Now its time for a treat. What do spider monkeys like you like to eat? Mangoes! said Benny.
A sweet, juicy snack. Here are some mangoes for you to take back. Next stop, said the Cat, is Hot-Sand-So-Fab, where well meet Big Bruce. Hes a coconut crab. Hi there, said Big Bruce. Thanks for visiting me.
I am the biggest crab that youll ever see. Sorry Im late, but, you see, I was napping. Ill show you my trick. It is called sideways snapping. Sideways snapping, said Nick, looks easy. Its not.
Crabs like me, said Big Bruce, sideways-snap a whole lot. Nice trick! said the Cat. Now its time for a treat. I want something, said Big Bruce, thats delicious and sweet. Like a coconut! he said. In that tree theres a bunch.
I eat them for breakfast and dinner and lunch. With my strong claws, I can open them with one crack. Here are some coconuts for you to take back. Thank you, said the Cat. Now to Dry-Dust-Rust-a-Roo, where well visit a fruit bat whose name is Babu. Hello! said Babu, and Nick said, Hi, Babu! That sure looks like fun.
Can we hang out with you? Hanging upside down, said Babu, is my trick. Hey! Im getting a little bit dizzy, said Nick. What treat can we give to an upside-down bat? I know what hed like for a treat, said the Cat. No forks and no spoons. We dont even need plates. What Babu would like is a handful of dates! Take some, too, said Babu.
Put them right in your sack. Thanks, said the Cat. Now weve got to get back. Benny likes mangoes, said Sally. Me too. And swinging through trees is what he likes to do.
Babu likes dates and he hangs all day long. Big Bruce cracks coconuts with claws that are strong. And all the sweet treats they gave us, said the Cat, fit perfectly in my Halloween hat!
