With this second book on the ill-fated battle of Loos, fought in September and October 1915, a great gap in the coverage of the British Western Front battlefields in the Battleground Europe series has been filled. Loos is a rather depressing battle; and it has to be said, it was fought over rather depressing - or at least unrepossessing - countryside.
Loos has been sadly neglected by military historians, and this book helps to fill the gap; though it should be noted that the Official History account is a generally sound one. People, understandly, are put off by the Official History's rather stolid appearance - and of course for many years it was practically unobtainable. Philip Warner's book on Loos (now back in print) was about all that was popularly available in recent years, if one chose to ignore the extraordinary ill-informed
