P.O.W. in the Pacific: Memoirs of an American Doctor in World War II: summary, description and annotation

This is the story of William N. Donovan, a U.S. Army medical officer in the Philippines who, as a prisoner of war, faced unspeakable conditions and abuse in Japanese camps during World War II. Through his own words we learn of the brutality, starvation, and disease that he and other men endured at the hands of their captors. And we learn of the courage and determination that Donovan was able to summon in order to survive. P.O.W. in the Pacific: Memoirs of an American Doctor in World War II describes the last weeks before Donovans capture and his struggles after being taken prisoner at the surrender of Corregidor to the Japanese on May 6, 1942. He remained a P.O.W. until his release on August 14, 1945, V-J Day. Shocking, moving, and yet tinged with Donovans dry sense of humor, P.O.W. in the Pacific offers a new perspective-that of a medical doctor-on the experience of captivity in Japanese prison camps as well as on the war in the Pacific. The book is edited by Donovans daughter Josephine, with the assistance of her sister, Ann Devigne Donovan. Readers will be inspired by this true story of one Americans heroism.

Introduction
World War II has been called the greatest single event in human history. Many studies and many memoirsespecially of the war in Europehave appeared. Less well known is the story of the U.S. forces in the Pacific, and comparatively little attention has been paid to the experience of American prisoners of war held by the Japanese. Many of their stories, which include some of the most heinous atrocities of the war, have not been heard, although a few (mostly privately printed) memoirs and oral histories have appeared.
The memoirs presented here are those of my father, William N. Donovan, who was then a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He experienced firsthand many of the decisive events in the war in the Philippines. Stationed at Fort McKinley near Manila when the war broke out, he worked as a battlefront doctor during the siege of Bataan and Corregidor in the early months of 1942. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese at the surrender of Corregidor on May 6, 1942, and remained a POW until late August 1945, shortly after V-J Day (August 14 in the States).
