Foreword
This reprint of Edward Lansdale's account of his service in Southeast Asia is not only a contribution to history and a tribute to a fine American, it is a well-timed lesson for our nation as we see the end of the Cold War and must consider the policies, the programs, and the tactics we should adopt for the new era facing us.
Ed always put the individual citizen at the center of his efforts, and reached out to understand him and his surroundings, however far an Asian peasant might be geographically and culturally from the middle Americans with whom Ed grew up. When we followed his approach, as in the Philippines, we succeeded in finding good leaders and helped them in the fight against their, and our, enemies. When we pushed Ed (and them) aside and put our faith in overwhelming force, as in Vietnam, we ultimately failed.
