Foreword
This book is about the Sino-French War, which came about as a result of the rivalry between those countries over their influence in Vietnam. Although there was no official declaration of war, the conflict is named as such by the historians, and rightly so due to its scale and the forces involved on both sides. For France, the war with China was one of the largest colonial conflicts before World War I and certainly the largest in terms of the involvement of its naval forces. This book is mainly focused on naval operations, although, to give the reader the whole picture of the conflict, land operations, both in Tonkin (North Vietnam) and Taiwan are alluded to. There is in fact a significant overlap between land and sea operations, as the French gunboat flotillas operating on the Tonkinese rivers played an important part in the military operations.
The war itself broke out in 1884, but events leading up to it from the middle of the 19th Century are described. The genesis of the conflict and description of its early stages is essential to understand further developments. The book also contains a chapter devoted to a comparison of the belligerents military strength, in respect of both their naval and army forces. Description of the military operations is supplemented with annexes: a breakdown of the Chinese Navy at the time of the war period, and French Navy list of all warships involved in the conflict, as well as the naval artillery used by both sides.
The book is illustrated, including maps and profiles of both the Chinese and French warships to give as comprehensive a sense of the conflict as possible.
The Chinese names are given in the Wade-Giles transcription. For geographical names and names indexes the pinyin transcription is also given. For the names of warships the Pinyin transcription is provided in the Chinese Navy list.
