Laura Secord is now famous for her singular feat of bravery during the War of 1812, but did she warn the British and help defeat the American invaders as her legend says?

Short-listed for the Speakers Book Award, 2013
After dragging her injured husband off the battlefield during the War of 1812, Laura Secord (1775-1868) was forced to house American soldiers for financial support while she nursed him back to health. It was during this time that she overheard the American plan to ambush British troops at Beaver Dams.
Through an outstanding act of perseverance and courage in 1813, Laura walked an astonishing 30 kilometers from her home to a British outpost to warn Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Despite facing rough terrain, the ever-present danger of being caught by American troops, and rather delicate encounters with Native forces, Laura reached FitzGibbon just in time for the British to prepare and execute an ambush on American military nearby, forcing the U.S. general to surrender.
Laura lived a very long time, dying at the age of 93. In her lifetime the government never formally recognized her singular feat of bravery, and much controversy still envelopes her legacy.

I am most grateful to Michael Carroll, associate publisher and editorial director at Dundurn Press for offering me this project and to Allison Hirst for her skillful editing. Everyone at Dundurn that Ive had the pleasure of working with has been not only knowledgeable, but also supportive and eager to help, and I thank them all for that.

While writing this book I visited the Niagara Historical Society and Museum in Niagara-on-the-Lake and was able to see for myself their extensive collection of artifacts, including several personal items that had belonged to Laura Secord. I must also acknowledge the numerous publications of the Niagara Historical Society and Museum that are available online. I continue to be grateful for the system of interlibrary loans that has enabled me to access books on Laura Secord as well as on the War of 1812, which provided the backdrop to a large part of Lauras story.

There are few known details of Laura Ingersoll Secords earliest years in the United States (177595), many of which were spent amidst the turmoil of the American Revolution and the War of Independence. Charles Taylors book, History of Great Barrington (Berkshire County), Massachusetts , published in 1892, helped me to fill in some of the blanks. Another book, The Housatonic: Puritan River by Chard Powers Smith, published in 1924, I found useful for visualizing the physical surroundings of Lauras first twenty years.
