The Central Australian Expedition 1844-1846 / The Journals of Charles Sturt: The Journals of Charles Sturt: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Central Australian Expedition 1844-1846 / The Journals of Charles Sturt: The Journals of Charles Sturt" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

In August 1844 a heavily-laden party led by Captain Charles Sturt set out from Adelaide to head into the unexplored vastness of central Australia. Amongst their equipment was a boat: as well as carrying out his mission of scientific investigation and mapping the topography, Sturt was convinced he would find the inland sea that was reputed to lie in the middle of the continent and so make his reputation. This is the first full publication of Sturts original journals of the trip. They record the hardships of the journeying through the parched landscape, but also show how his efforts helped reveal the nature of much of the mysterious interior of Australia, and how, in a manner uncharacteristic of his times, he established respectful and co-operative relations with the Aborigines he encountered along the way.

The generous assistance of many individuals has made this volume possible, and while everyone who contributed cannot be named, my appreciation goes out to all who assisted. Several people, however, made long-term commitments to this undertaking, and mere words of acknowledgment cannot adequately convey the importance of the role they played. From the outset, I had intended to create - not simply a transcription of Sturt's journals - but an informative, fully annotated edition that would be useful to a wide readership. In order to do so, I depended on the expertise of some of the best people in the fields of Australian anthropology, botany, and ornithology, fields far outside my limited knowledge. When I initially asked for their assistance, every one came on board with exceptional enthusiasm.
First, I wish to express my appreciation for the valuable insight and information about Aboriginal culture that was provided by Dr Philip Jones, Senior Curator, Department of Anthropology, South Australian Museum, Adelaide, South Australia. Dr Jones not only supplied nearly all the detailed information about Aborigines and Sturt's observations of them, but as a South Australian himself, Dr Jones was able to facilitate this project in dozens of ways. He always shared his time and knowledge unstintingly and with good humour.
The copious annotations related to Sturt's botanical observations were made by Mr Rodney J. F. Flenderson, recently retired from the post of Senior Principal Botanist, Queensland Herbarium, Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha, Toowong, Queensland. His annotations were provided with a remarkable enthusiasm for care, accuracy, and thoroughness, and he displayed a generous patience with my often-unscientific mind.
