Minecraft is one of the biggest success stories in video game
history.
A Game Unlike
Any Other
Minecraft is one of the most popular video
games ever made. Since it was first
released in 2009, more than 122 million
copies have been sold. You have probably
played it yourself. You may have watched
your favorite streamers play it online.
But do you know how the game was made?
Notch shows off one of the many awards he has received for his
work on Minecraft .
A Man Named
Notch
Believe it or not, Minecraft started as the
creation of a single talented game maker.
His name is Markus Persson. Minecraft fans
know him better by his online name, Notch.
Notch is from Sweden. As a kid, he loved
playing with Lego blocks. He also loved
to make his own computer programs.
He made his first one when he was eight
years old!
In Dwarf Fortress , characters and environments are represented
with colorful letters, numbers, and other symbols.
The Early Days
Notch taught himself to be an expert
computer programmer. He got his first job
working for a video game company when
he was just 18 years old. He also made his
own games for fun in his spare time. In
2009, he started working on a game where
players could break or place blocks to
build their own worlds.
Notchs Favorite Games
Two of Notchs favorite video games are Dwarf Fortress and
Infiniminer . Both games have simple graphics . They also make
players think creatively. These kinds of games helped inspire
Notch to make Minecraft .
Almost right away, Minecraft had a big audience that tuned in to
watch Notchs gameplay videos.
Cave Game
Notch called his game Cave Game . In May
2009, he posted a YouTube video of himself
playing it. Many people saw it. They started
asking Notch when the game would come
out. A few days later, he released a free
version for download. He also changed the
games name to Minecraft .
While Minecraft is available for smartphones, tablets, and many
game consoles today, the early versions only worked on PCs.
Word of Mouth
Thousands of people downloaded
Minecraft in its first month. They had never
played anything like it. Many people told
their friends about the game. They posted
YouTube videos of themselves playing.
They even created their own Minecraft
mods . By early 2010, Minecraft had
100,000 players.
Changing the Game
Minecraft has changed a lot over the years. Features such as
multiplayer mode and enemy mobs are a major part of Minecraft
today. But in the early days, these came as exciting new updates
to the game!
Today, the Mojang logo is a familiar sight to millions of people
around the world.
Making Mojang
Minecraft was so successful that Notch quit
his job. In 2010, he decided to start his own
game company with his friends Jakob
Porsr and Carl Manneh. They called the
company Mojang. Notch was excited to
work on his own game projects full-time. He
wouldnt have a boss to tell him how the
game should be made.
Fans cheer in excitement at the 2016 Minecon event.
A Worldwide
Hit
Mojang hired employees to improve
Minecraft and add features. At this time, the
game was still a beta version . The team
at Mojang worked to build a completed
version of the game. Finally, in November
2011, Minecraft version 1.0 was ready to
release. It had most of the features that
Minecraft players know and love today.
Minecon
The release of Minecraft version 1.0 was celebrated at the 2011
Minecon event. Minecon is a gathering of Minecraft fans from
around the world. It is held each year in a different location.
Exciting news about Minecraft is often revealed at Minecon.
Members of Microsofts Minecraft Team discuss the future of
the game at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo, also
known as E3.
From Mojang to
Microsoft
Minecraft became even more successful
after the release of version 1.0. It sold
millions of copies. The team at Mojang
created new versions that could run on
smartphones, tablets, and video game
consoles. This drew even more fans to the
game. Finally, in 2015, the technology
company Microsoft offered to buy Mojang
for an incredible $2.5 billion!
Virtual reality technology is changing the way people experience
Minecraft and other video games.
The Future of
Minecraft
Notch agreed to sell Mojang to Microsoft.
He no longer works on Minecraft . Instead,
he has gone back to working on his own
small game projects. Maybe one of them
will be an even bigger hit than Minecraft !
The developers at Mojang and
Microsoft are still improving Minecraft . They
have added new features such as a virtual
reality mode. They might have even more
amazing things in store for the future!
