In 1860 the United States was a bitterly divided nation. There were strong divisionsbetween the northern and southern halves of the country, both of which had differenteconomies and traditions. Two main political parties dominated politics in the UnitedStates at the time. The Republicans largely supported northern interests, while theDemocrats largely supported southern interests. Relations between the two partieswere getting increasingly bitter by 1860, especially over the issues of slavery andstates rights.
In 1862 two brothers fought on opposite sides during the same Civil War battle, withoutknowing that they were within a few feet of each other. James and Alexander Campbellwere from a Scottish family. Alexander lived in New York City, but his brother Jameshad settled in Charleston, South Carolina. Each supported the state where he lived, and so they fought on opposite sides in the Battle of Secessionville, in June 1862. Theywrote to each other after the battle.
