The Moscow Uprising of December, 1905: A Background Study: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Moscow Uprising of December, 1905: A Background Study" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This book, originally published in 1987, focuses on the factors which contributed to the Moscow uprising of December 1905, by comprehensively surveying a vast field of both Russian and English language literature on the subject. In order to explain why the uprising occurred in Moscow when it did, the author discusses the contributions of the Bolsheviks, the Mensheviks, the Soviet-Revolutionaries and the government, concluding that the uprising happened at that time because the parties were committed to it and agitated for it and the local government in Moscow was not in control of the situation.

I would like to thank the members of my dissertation committee, but especially Professor Donald W. Treadgold for his patience and guidance during the course of my doctoral work.
Thanks are also due to the staffs of the several libraries and research institutes in the Soviet Union, Finland, and the United States where I was fortunate enough to be able to work. Among said staffs are those at the Lenin Library, the Central State Archives of the October Revolution, and the Central State Military-Historical Archives, all in Moscow; at the Helsinki University Library; at the Columbia University Archive of Russian and East European History and Culture; at the Hoover Institute, and at the University of Washington Library in Seattle, Washington.
And certainly I am grateful for the Fulbright-Hays Grant and for the support of the Inter-University Committee on Travel Grants which made it possible for me to do research in the Soviet Union in 196768.

Vpered (M)Vpered , Bolshevik newspaper published in Moscow in December, 1905; to distinguish it from central Bolshevik organ of same name published in 1904 and first part of 1905.
The Moscow uprising of 1905 encompassed a general strike which began on December 7, a two or three-day transition period during which the strike turned into an armed insurrection, and a week to ten days of sporadic fighting between workers and revolutionaries on the one hand and government forces on the other. This work will not, however, be concerned particularly with what happened after December 7, that is, with the events of the uprising itself; instead, it will be a background study and will focus on factors which contributed to the coming of the uprising. The immediate purpose here is to survey the historical literature on the subject, to discuss the limitations of that literature, and to set forth the main lines of inquiry to be followed.
It is somewhat misleading to use the term Western literature in reference to the Moscow uprising. At least this is the case if the state of English-language scholarship on the subject can be taken as indicative of a general situation. There is nothing approaching a detailed account of either the background to the uprising or of the uprising itself to be found.
