Plural Pasts: Power, Identity and the Ottoman Sieges of Nagykanizsa Castle: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Plural Pasts: Power, Identity and the Ottoman Sieges of Nagykanizsa Castle" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Through a study of a variety of Ottoman and modern Turkish accounts of the Ottoman-Habsburg sieges of Nagykanizsa Castle (1600-01) including official documents, correspondence, histories, and more literary genres such as gazavatnames [campaign narratives], Plural Pasts explores Ottoman literacy practices. By considering the diverse roles that the various accounts served construction of identities, forging of diplomatic alliances and legitimization of political ideologies and geo-political imaginations it explores the cultural and socio-political significance the various accounts had for different audiences. In addition, it interweaves theoretical reflection with textual analysis. Using the sieges of Nagykanizsa as a case study, it offers a sophisticated contribution to ongoing historiographical arguments: namely, how historians construct hierarchies of primary sources and judge some to be more truthful, or more valuable, than others; how texts are assigned to particular genres based on perceived epistemological status as story or history, fact or fiction; and the circular role that historians and their histories play in constructing, reflecting and reinforcing cultural and political imaginaries.

In general, words have been transcribed in accordance with modified modern Turkish conventions with the intention of making the work more accessible to a Turkish-reading, but not necessarily Ottoman-reading, audience. Words such as vizier, sultan , and pasha , which have a common status in English usage, have been given in their Anglicised form except when part of a Turkish or Ottoman-Turkish quotation.
Names are not just designations of practices; they are complex cultural practices. The naming of a place not only involves a designation, but it incorporates a particular perspective, a historical reference and often an entire narrative expressing the locations historic significance. Whether a place is named as Istolni Belgrad, Szkesfehrvr or Stuhlweissenburg reflects a geographical and political viewpoint. Place names in this work are therefore rendered in accordance with the modern spelling of the country they are now located in, except where common English alternatives exist; thus Vienna not Wien. The exception is in direct quotations when a transcribed form of that in the original text is employed. Upon the first occurrence of a place name, common alternatives will be given in parenthesis.
This book has been a long time in the making. It grew out of research that I originally undertook for my PhD thesis many years ago. In the intervening time I have benefitted enormously from the generous support of and thoughtful discussions with colleagues working in a variety of disciplines including Ottoman history, medieval literature and the theory of history there are too many to name, but my thanks are due to all of them.
The support of a number of institutions was also fundamental to my research. The University of Birmingham awarded me a full grant to cover the costs of undertaking a PhD, without which I would not have been able to complete the research necessary for this book. St Marys University, Twickenham has not only provided a supportive environment for my work over the past twelve years but generously funded periods of sabbatical leave which enabled me to make progress on this book. Many libraries also allowed me access to their manuscript collections and helped me to locate sources, so my thanks go to the Biblioteca Universitaria in Bologne; the Magyar Tudomnyos Akademia Konyvtara in Budapest; the Berlin Preussische National-Bibliothek and the Staatsbibliothek; the Universittsbibliothek in Bratislava; the Dar al-Kutab in Cairo; Cambridge University Library; the British Library and the National Archives in London; the Oxford Bodleian Library; the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library; Millet Ktphanesi, Arkeoloji Mzesi and Sleymaniye Ktphanesi in Istanbul; the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich; the Bibliothque National in Paris; the Kriegsarchiv and Staatsarchiv in Vienna as well as Bilkent and Istanbul University Libraries. My thanks also go to Dr Waley, Pal Fodor and K. Celanova for providing me with information concerning hard-to-locate manuscripts.
