Space precludes a complete listing of all those who have been my mentors: it must suffice to say that I am indebted to both the many students and practitioners of contemporary politics who have offered in print their thoughts and conclusions on European affairs, and to my departmental colleagues, past and present, at Strathclyde, Bergen, Warwick and Aberdeen Universities for giving me the benefit of their expertise and knowledge. The final synthesis and interpretation is, of course, my responsibility alone. To cover in a few hundred pages five decades of European history during a period which has witnessed dramatic and far-reaching socioeconomic and political change is a daunting task. Selection and condensation are unavoidable. I have therefore concentrated upon those events and themes which seem to me to be of the most value for an understanding of the rich vein of postwar Western European politics as a whole. By so doing, I hope that I have not confused the issue further.
