Introduction

I magine stepping aboard a creaking wooden ship with billowing sails. You are about to begin a trip across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to an unnamed land. Youll toss and turn in rough seas for months and months. During the trip, there will be no way to contact any of your loved ones.

Well, thats exactly what some brave men and women did in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. They left their homesand in many cases members of their familyto settle a new land, as foreign to them as Mars is to you. These men and women followed in the footsteps of some famous explorers, traveling to the land we know now as the United States of America. They started a new life that would forever change our world.

This book will help you to understand a little about what life was like for the colonists who journeyed to this new land. You will discover why those people chose to make such a bold move. Youll understand how they lived and learn some interesting facts about famousand not-so-famouscolonists. You will also create some projects that will help show you how the colonists survived, entertained themselves, dressed, and communicated. Youll learn about life in a colonial home and in a colonial town, and about colonial craftspeople and colonial law and order.

Most of the projects in this book can be made by kids with minimal adult supervision, and the supplies needed are either common household items or easily available at craft stores. So, take a step back into colonial America and get ready to
