Glue Gun

A glue gun is a crafters best friend. It is a versatile tool that can bring together even the most stubborn pieces of crafting material. Always use caution when working with a glue gun since the tip gets very hot, and remember to prop your glue gun up correctly to prevent the hot tip from touching anything that it shouldnt.

Scissors

Many of the projects in this book call for scissors. You probably have a pair of scissors in your house already, but not all scissors are created equal. Scissors should be able to make clean cuts in many different types of materials. You dont want to use scissors that will tear, rip, break, or fray your materials. If you want your cuts to come out crisp, make sure that your scissors are not dull. If you need to determine whether your scissors are sharp enough to make great DIY crafts, all you need to do is use your scissors to cut some construction paper. If the scissors cut through the paper crisply and leave a nice edge, then you are good to go. If the paper ends up with frayed edges or does not come apart cleanly, you should replace them with a pair of new, sharp scissors. It seems like such a simple thing, but it can make a big difference in how your projects turn out.

Utility Knife

A utility knife, such as an X-Acto, can be a very useful alternative to scissors when you want extra precision or need to cut against a flat surface. Utility knives are commonly found in craft stores so it should be easy to find one when you are searching for your other materials. While using a utility knife you should always have a surface you dont mind getting scratched and cut below the material your are cutting. Cardboard is a good option, but anything that is hard and you dont mind getting beat up will work.

Paintbrushes

When it comes to applying paint, there are many different types of brushes you can use, such as a sponge brush or synthetic-bristle paintbrush. For the projects in this book, the type of paintbrush you use will not make a huge difference. That said, consider using a sponge brush when applying paint to large objects. Sponge brushes are easy to use and cost less than traditional paintbrushes, which makes them ideal for DIY projects. They come in all sizes, but the 1" size will be perfect for all of the projects that use them in this book. Sponge brushes are great for quickly adding a thick wash of paint to whatever project you are working on.

A synthetic-bristle paintbrush can be used the same way, but the application will most likely require a few coats. Look for a brush with bristles that are " to 1" wide, so you can use it for more precise application when working on detailed projects.

Mod Podge

No craft arsenal is complete without Mod Podge, an all-purpose gluing material that can be used in many different ways while youre crafting. Use it to add a finishing coat to a project, as a sticky base to add glitter to, or even to stick things together. Mod Podge is easily found at nearly any craft store, as well as at online retailers like Amazon. While there are many varieties to choose from, glossy Mod Podge is the best for what youre going to be doing here.
