Who and what is Hungry Girl? Im Lisa Lillien, a.k.a. Hungry Girl! And Im not a nutritionist Im just hungry.
I dont have any health-related or medical degrees, but I consider myself a foodologist, because Im obsessed with foodhow incredible it is, and how much of it I can eat and still fit into my pants. While theres no official definition, clean eating generally focuses on a diet of whole, natural, or real foods: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, natural protein, etc. What wont you find in the clean approach to eating? Refined sugar, heavily processed food, and anything artificial. There are most certainly different degrees of clean eating and to be honest, some approaches are intimidating. Is clean eating good for weight loss/management? Not necessarily. (But it certainly can be!) At the end of the day, CALORIES COUNT. And its easy to take in too many calories on a diet of all-natural and/or clean foods. Thats why people who want to make smarter food choices need to look at the whole story and see the big picture. While were better off choosing healthier ingredients, in order to lose or maintain weight, we need to be mindful of the number of calories we consume. (Thats where my calorie-slashed recipes come in ) What does Clean & Hungry mean? Clean & Hungry combines the best of Hungry Girl with the best of clean eating. Its a delicious, satisfying, real-world approach to eating clean and loving it. I say real world because my approach to healthier eating has always been realistic, achievable, and enjoyable, as opposed to restrictive, extreme, or intimidating. The HG philosophy is all about balance. Its okay to have a brownie every now and thenjust try to make (or even find!) a better-for-you version. I even feel that its okay to eat so-called junk foodsI just try to stick with ones made from smarter ingredients. How is this book different from earlier Hungry Girl books? Diet food didnt really taste good, and no one believed you could lose weight and keep it off eating pizza and chocolate cake. But I knew it was possible, because I had been doing it myself for years. Early Hungry Girl content gave people what they wanted at the timea lot of low-fat and fat-free ingredients, low-calorie packaged foods, and reduced-calorie finds that were often heavily processed. But as the diet environment shifted and I personally started eating cleaner, the brand evolved and moved in a healthier direction. That doesnt mean I never eat those foods or that I dont enjoy my recipes from years past; I just do so in moderation, and less and less as time goes on. Hungry Girl was always meant to be a bridge between the average fast-food-filled, junk-food-packed diet and the idealistic way of eating perfectly healthy at all times.
