I n 2008, my wife Elizabeth and I gained our financial freedom. More importantly, as a result of that, we gained our time freedom. With that freedom comes the ability to shape and craft each day as we decide. Now, we have an extraordinary amount of time to spend with our family. We both do work that we love, and we have money to do it.

Looking around, that actually makes us exceedingly rare. How we got here isnt something Ive spoken of often. Talking money isnt a fun topic for most adults, particularly when one or more participants in the conversation isnt doing well with their time or money. But when the conversation comes up, the same question is always asked:

How did you do it?

Each friend who asks that questionusually in privatehas the same things in common. They are overworked at a job they dont enjoy, stressed on time and in so much debt that it appears as though it is now a part of them like an extra body part. They have a dream to be self-employed, but they already dont get enough time with their children to even dream of starting something on the side. Their marriages are stressed, and they feel completely overwhelmed.

Elizabeth and I never struck it rich with the lottery. There wasnt an inheritance. We started on our journey more than $140,000 in debt, with a child on the way, while earning $15 per hour. When we escaped that crushing debt and low-paying jobs, I realized that not only should I write this, I have an obligation to do so.
