Acknowledgments
In Autumn 1994, the seed for this book was planted in the fertile Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, in the office of The Women's Times. Publisher Eugenie Sills and then-editor Maria Black asked me for a quick feature on things women could do to stay well. "Maybe a list of some kind," they offered. "Just write about what you and your friends do to be well," they added. Four days later, "The Seven Words of Well-Being for Women'' were born: Move, Touch, Listen, Feel, Trust, Gather, Receive. The piece took me forty-one years and forty-five minutes to write. Much love and thanks, Eugenie, for providing a place where I could create, support, laugh, play, write, blossom, belong, and appreciate more than ever the awesome power of women's words.
I am deeply grateful for whatever angel sent me Barbara Ciletti, my self-proclaimed mentor as well

as my agent and magical friend. Thanks, Barbara, for unfailingly encouraging me to believe, commit, trust, and prove. For letting me whine that one time I needed to, and for making me focus when I doubted I could.
Chances are I never would have survived the twisted and broken finger, the surgery, the houselessness, the crashed computer, the moves, and the money thing without my dearest friend, Christal McDougall, who cheerfully took on the roles of word processor, co-brainstormer, and Goddess of Iced Tea and Animal Crackers. I treasure you, Christal, for giving new meaning to the words chat, flirt, giggle, depend, inspire, push, and triumph. And lunch. Of course.
Thanks to my parents, Bernard and Esther Snyder, for continuing to teach me how to ask, accept, receive, and respect, and for coming to understand how much it means for me to dare, to

risk, to struggle, and to feel. My favorite word for you is admire.
Thank you, Carl, Ethan, and Amara, for giving me the space to retreat, to heal, to envision, to work, and to conceive this book. Thanks, Dave, for helping me remember to dance, to walk, to breakfast, to stretch, and to breathe. You all remind me of why we meet, why we partner, why we love, and why we care.
I also wholeheartedly acknowledge every woman and every man who ever walked beside me on my own journey to becoming a well woman. You know who you are.

Introduction
You may think this is a book about words, but it's really a book about freedom. The freedom to be the woman you were always destined to be, and to be her with a powerful sense of well-being.
This is a book about rememberingto live, love, trust, cry, surrender, dance, and sing. To take the time to discover who you really are, to feel more deeply, to ask for help when you need it, and to receive that help with gratitude. It is a simple book, filled with simple things you can do to grow and create and move and reweave the life that you yearn for and richly deserve.
