Acknowledgments
We offer heartfelt thanks to the people who helped us with this book. Sid Farrar and Bill Chickering of Hazelden Educational Materials supported this project from its inception. Guy Kettelhack, an extraordinarily gifted writer, editor, and thinker sculpted into words our ideas about Step Zero and added more than a few good ideas of his own. We could not have done this project without him. Our patients supplied the raw material for this book and we thank them for the opportunity to be part of their lives. Our sincere thanks to members of our clinical staff, especially Andrew Tatarsky, Ph.D.; Edward J. Poska, CAC; Robin Lightman, CSW, CAC; and Margo Harrison, CSW, who have helped us put the concept of Step Zero into clinical practice.

As for the suggestions you may expect to find in these pages, you may be thinking,
