The rollicking history of a dreaded real-life figure in the folklore of the Mississippi backwoods Thanks to the subject of this fascinating book, Sullivans Hollow, a seemingly idyllic valley in south Mississippi, gained its rightful position among the notorious place names in American folklore. To the citizenry in the hamlets of Sullivans Hollow Wild Bill Sullivan was the fearsome local rascal whose bent for pranks, jokes, and chicanery quite often verged on the murderous. To travelers his name inspired a deadly dread of a chance meeting with him on a lonely trail. Wild Bills love of liquor and his bounding in and out of trouble embellished his darkly checkered reputation. For the annals of folklore he is prime material. Here for the first time in paperback is the story of this nineteenth-century Mississippi maverick, as told by his great-granddaughter. She recounts stories of his best-known pranks-such as stripping a Bible peddler naked and hitching him all day to a plow, and she puts a believable face on the legend of Wild Bills having killed fifty men (or more, as the story proliferates). What reader of this book could fail to believe that no traveler wanted to be passing through Sullivans Hollow after sundown?

PREFACE
This is the story of Tom Sullivan, the founder of Sullivan's Hollow and the patriarch of twenty-two children; but primarily, it is the story of Tom's grandson, Wild Bill Sullivan, the undisputed "king of the Hollow." The reputation of William C. "Wild Bill" Sullivan of Sullivan's Hollow, Mississippi, is still familiar to many native Mississippians. It has long been my desire to seek the truth about Wild Bill, regardless of what the truth might reveal.
I have felt that someone should sift through the legends told about this unique character and preserve the truth for posterity. I wanted to record impressions of those who have firsthand remembrances of Wild Bill, and I realize that more and more of this generation are dying each passing year. Wild Bill was my mother's grandfather. He told his story to my father, V. M. Howell, who recorded it in a short unpublished manuscript in 1930. I have some remembrance of my great-grandfather before his death in 1932. Coupling these factors with my training as a historian, I decided to try to record an accurate picture of Wild Bill's life.
The following story is the culmination of that search. It is not the entire story. Gaps will be evident to some readers. In considering a life as colorful as that of Bill Sullivan, one finds differing versions. There will be some parts that people will disagree with because they have always heard it told differently. Then again, there will be some episodes here that have never been told in printat least not in the detail presented here.
Naturally, the farther back into time that one is able to trace his

forefathers, the more difficult it becomes to verify what few records can be found. Separating the myths from reality is a never-ending process. One should realize, however, that there is always some plausibility interwoven with the legends, or else the tall tales would never have been believed and preserved from generation to generation. Even though with repeated tellings distortions creep in, the eccentric becomes humorous, and day-by-day mundane activities become unheralded valor, much truth can still be gleaned by the careful researcher. In this publication wherever conclusions have been inferred or deduced from existing data rather than being verified from primary sources, the reader is so informed. In fact, for the years prior to 1830 I generally have presented the accumulated data and will let the reader arrive at his own conclusions.
