PREFACE
O ur lives on this Earth are shaped by innumerable forcesthe people we encounter, the way we perceive the world to be, and how we view our emotional state of being. Believe it or not, the experiences we endure shape our thoughts and affect how we relate to every area of our life.
The narratives and the self-talk that exists in our minds shape our decisions, our self-esteem, and how we interact in social situations, at work, and in our families. Most of us have absorbed both positive messaging and negative messaging along the way. When our caretakers, friends, teachers, and mentors showed us their pride, support, and love, it helped build our confidence and bolster our sense of self. But when the negative messages hit us, we took them to heart, as well, and may even now be mistakenly playing them over and over for years, even though they serve no worthwhile purpose in our lives.
I remember being in third grade, when my teacher told me that math was not my strong suit and that I should therefore focus my energies on what I was good atEnglish and history. More creative endeavors, in other words. For years, I would remember that day, that narrative that I would never be good at math, and decided to forget about learning any further. That conversation with my teacher rooted itself in my psyche. I stopped trying in math, to the point where on my SAT, I skipped any math questions that looked hard. I didnt even try.
Now, I run a business and know I am capable of learning anything , especially numbers. Things have changed; the narrative changed when I became aware of where that crazy thought had come from, the underlying cause of why I thought what I did. I made the choice to learn, to take action and do my part to understand numbers. And I realized its not that hard after all.
This is just an example of how one tiny moment in time can have a ripple effect on how a persons life unfolds.
We all have moments like this; moments that shaped and molded how we view ourselves. Here and now, make the decision not to let someone elses perception, view, or judgment about who you are define you, define your self-worth.
In my first book, Rewired: A Bold and New Approach to Addiction and Recovery, my intention was to help people change their lives for the better and teach a new way of living, free from substance abuse, destructive patterns, toxic relationships, and limiting self-beliefs. I wrote Rewired to share my journey and provide others with tools anyone can use to recover and find hope in their lives.
