Studies of this kind could not be successfully completed without the consent and participation of IFC's business partners. Special thanks go to them, for they have given generously of their time, answering detailed questions about their operations.
The authors also gratefully acknowledge the many helpful comments by referees and readers of early drafts and the contributions by Mary Locke, editor, and Kathleen A. Lynch, senior editor and project manager, in shaping the final form of this study.

Introduction
How does economic development happen? There are many theories, but one thing is sure. It doesn't happen without smart people, good ideas, and money to invest in both. The International Finance Corporation provides investment capital and know-how to privately sponsored ventures that further economic growth in developing countriesand profitably for all investors. What is more, IFC stands by its commitments.
Two of the case studies profiled here are typical of IFC-sponsored ventures, the Kori Kollo gold and silver mines in Bolivia and the Al Hikma pharmaceutical company in Jordan. Chosen for commercial viability and development potential, they are fulfilling their promise on schedule.
