PREFACE
This book is the work of many people on the front lines of management. As a journalist and catalyst, I have but put together their views on how to develop the verbal communication skills that help advance a manager's career.
In researching the chapters that follow I interviewed a wide range of business peoplemanagers and supervisors, CEOs and corporation presidents, and management consultantsas well as speech consultants; training directors; educators; communications experts; public relations counselors; and social and industrial psychologists. The book is a compilation of their advice.* Their plain-speaking, nuts-and-bolts tips are for managers just beginning a career as well as for those who are further along on their way to upper management.
Through real-life stories and typical corporate dialogues, you'll learn what to say, how to say it, and when and where to speak. You'll find out how to increase your visibility and display your upper-management potential. Moreover, these straightforward suggestions will work in every situation where your communication skills are vital to your effectiveness.
As I talked to people in business, I was struck by how often the successful strategies are also so simplebasically, such pure common sense. And always the bottom line is the same: Good verbal communication is based on good human relationships.
Many people shared in this book, but I owe special thanks to Marc Dorio, Mark Clemente, Dr. Paula Kurman, Laura Hart, Michael Levine, J. Porter Henry, Jr., Milo Sobel, Dr. Donald
