Change your thoughts, and you change your world. Norman Vincent Peale
Once you have set a goal, know in your heart, you can reach them. It may mean educating yourself to gain a skill to be successful, but then still remember some painters paint a thousand canvases before someone takes notice, sculptors work decades before selling their first work and of course, fiction writers write in boring technical fields while writing dozens of failed novels before publishing the first one. In every case, the person changed the way they thought and changed their world.
I have lived my life by this motto. So can you.
San Antonio-The Attack
A biological attack on US military bases included San Antonio. The viral agent spread across the compounds, then the communities surrounding those bases increasing the death and destruction. While coping with the hundreds of dead and dying from the unknown agent, confusion reigned. The real horror became evident when the dead reanimated and attacked the living.
Elizabeth Jameson received a warning from her military police husband. He demanded she takes their two daughters and leaves the city, immediately. When caught in a massive traffic jam on a freeway, Liz and her children were separated while trying to escape the ensuing massacre. Liz secured her daughters behind a fence then led the infected away. While trying to get back to her children, an infected attacked Liz. She was rescued by a trio of Viet Nam Veterans, Harry Walters, David Simon, and John Tilman, who then volunteered to aid her in her quest to find her daughters. Liz and the vets arrived just in time to witness three soldiers in a military vehicle spirit away the children in a mad dash to escape the infected swarming the alley. Liz and her saviors mounted motorcycles and raced after her daughters. Ultimately, their quest is abandoned when Liz falls ill, and they are met by members of the Pine Springs Canyon compound.
The day of the attack, Matt Monroe was just another soldier struggling to cope with life back in the States. Like most off-duty time since his return, he was spending the day drinking. With the infected swarming the streets, Matt was rescued by fellow soldiers, Jake Curtis and Larry Benson, from the rundown bar. Finding it impossible to escape with a passed-out Monroe, they dropped him into a dumpster and secured the lid. When the two men returned to the alley to rescue their friend, they found two children hidden in the trash bin along with him. Surrounded by the infected, the soldiers grabbed the kids and barely escaped. Matt and his team, with other rescued survivors, find security and safety at a campground. Over time Matt rescues more survivors in need of sanctuary including a brash, rough-speaking, female truck driver. Despite his promise to take the children to Pine Springs Canyon, he and his fellow soldiers rescue even more survivors while the camp struggles to feed and clothe an ever-growing population of mostly children and women. The struggle to get the children to their family is complicated and ends up postponed time and time again, but Matt is determined to get them to family.
Steve Benton, a double amputee, was in a rehabilitation center with Della Marshall and unaware there had been an attack until the city was overrun by the infected, and they were trapped. When the infected broke into the facility, Steve and Della rescued a small group of teens left to fend for themselves. Together the group faces loss and danger as they continue their journey to Pine Springs Canyon. The road is more dangerous than ever as they near their destination.
Brian Jameson, surviving the initial attack on the military base in San Antonio, makes his way through the city despite a torrential rainstorm flooding the municipality. He collected survivors and rescued others from the abuses of their fellow Texans. Brian faces danger at every turn as he travels hundreds of miles to Pine Springs Canyon where he hopes to find his wife, Liz, and two daughters. During his race to find his family, he is forced to face the atrocities of the new world delaying his quest time and again. Brian meets more than the dead when he is forced to face an adversary from his past.
In the treatment room at the Pine Springs Canyon Lodge, Carrie rinsed the still open wound on Ben Naschas arm for the last time. After blotting the injury with sterile gauze squares, she pulled a lighted magnifying glass over the outstretched arm for a closer look.
Ben seemed more curious than alarmed at the still-healing fissure in his forearm. Well, Doc? What do you think? Can I keep it?
Its not as bad as it was, Carrie mumbled while she rotated Bens arm back and forth examining the flesh under the glaring light. Finally, she announced. Well, I only see healthy tissue, but with that said, itll still take quite a while to heal. I still cant stitch it. She looked up and added. You should be on IV antibiotics for at least five days more days or longer. You should definitely not be going off into the mountains on a camping trip.
Ben sighed. Maybe, but the tribal elders have decided to move the camp, and I have to respect their decision. Youll just have to give me pills.
Carrie sighed and packed the wound while she tried to provide a laundry list of reasons to remain close to the lodge, but Ben was just as determined to leave. In the end, she bandaged the wound and gave up any further protests. Carrie disinfected a plastic top and bottom splint, taped them together, and finished the dressing with an Ace bandage to hold both halves in place. She replaced the sling over his shoulder and eased Bens arm into the sleeve. There you go. Now, let me get supplies together while you sit there and rest. I dont want you passing out.
Ben laughed. Ill try not to litter your floor.
*****
Liz Jameson watched her father, Will Edmonds, greet Bens son, Machn, when he entered the lodge. Machn led a black couple with two teens into the great room. Close on their heels was Tammy Robertson, carrying a single bag. Tammy glanced around as if checking into a hotel that was not meeting her stringent standards.
Liz cringed when she saw Robertson examine the room with such a critical eye. She wondered what her father would decide to do with Robertson, the civil rights attorney. As far as Liz was concerned, Tammy Robertson had not made a stellar first impression.
At a sudden commotion, Liz turned to see John Tilman, and Harry Walters saunter into the great room from the kitchen. Both men dressed in jeans and boots looked like bearded mountain men with sidearms strapped to their hips.
When John and Harry saw the black family, John stomped over to the black mans side and rested his hand on the mans shoulder and grinned at Liz and Will. Folks this is the man I was telling you about, Jesse Burns and his wife, Becka. The kids are LJ and Pattie. Jesse and LJ are both experienced mechanics and Becka cooked at a retirement home. John winked at Pattie. The little un is just trouble. Gonna be her daddys worse nightmare in a few years when she grows up to be the best looking girl in Texas. Gonna be a knockout. He laughed and bumped fists with the gawky ten-year-old with skinny arms and knobby knees.
When the child smiled, Liz realized it was probably right. Pattie was all arms and legs at ten, but in five or six years, she would be a real beauty. In addition to a golden mocha complexion, she had large dark eyes and full lips that were quick to smile.
