Preface

From twenty-three poorly defined territories called municipalities that existed in 1836, the state of Texas evolved to its present form of two hundred fifty-four organized governmental bodies that we know as Counties. This evolution can be traced in the changes in county boundaries over time. The steady progression of county maps reflects the migration of thousands of people from the United States and from numerous other countries around the world.
