Preface
This is a book about an idea and its implementation. The port city that Galveston came to be by 1900 was the result of the flow of ideas in the years immediately after the Civil War. Then followed thirty-five years of implementation, when the ideas of dreamers and thinkers were turned into concrete results by practical men. It was engineers, bankers, politicians, civic leaders, attorneys, craftsmen, mechanics, and laborers who finally shaped a world-class harbor capable of handling the largest ships afloat.
