Introduction
Hollywood discovered the black soldier in the 1980s. The film successes of A Soldier's Story and Glory more than a century after African Americans had become a permanent part of the U.S. Army gloomily emphasized the nation's belated coming to terms with a people who had fought in virtually every American war, from the shot heard round the world to the gunfire that pinned Manuel Noriega inside the Vatican Embassy in Panama, to Desert Storm that chased Saddam Hussein's troops from Kuwait.1
