Introduction
Throughout the history of the United States it has been the policy of the government to demobilize the army as quickly as possible after a war and send the soldiers home. Following World War I the country reverted to isolationism and the army was quickly reduced to the minimum size required to carry out limited overseas obligations and to provide a skeleton force for the defense of the United States at home. The basis for the organization of our army between the two world wars was the National Defense Act of 1920.
