We grew up in a small town in Rhode Island and were the only two redheads in our school. Being two years apart, we were always close friends and from an early age loved to experiment with beauty products. Unlike our friends at school, our eyelashes were blonde, our skin was fair and our hair was vibrantly red. When friends would share their favorite lip gloss, mascara or lotion, we knew our coloring and sensitive skin required its own redhead friendly products. We have fond memories of testing hundreds of products together in our home bathroom, and always joked that we knew How to be a Redhead. The name stuck and never left us.
Fast-forward to college and we were both studying business at the University of Miami. We would spend countless hours discussing how we should write a book about How to be a Redhead. Websites werent as popular as they are now, and we figured we would put all of our knowledge of redhead beauty into one book. We always envisioned having a space where redheads could go to and feel trendy, while getting the best beauty and fashion advice. The goal was to have a redheads blonde and brunette friends and family say, Being a redhead is so cool! I want to have red hair.
We decided to start the How to be a Redhead blog. Our aim was to empower every redhead woman to feel confident, look amazing and rock her beauty. We are strong believers in our catch phrase: Red hair is more than a hair color, its a lifestyle!
Within six months, we grew the blog into a website, and soon, How to be a Redhead became our full-time job. Shortly thereafter, we moved into a tiny apartment in the Upper West Side of New York City and worked tirelessly to accomplish years of vision. Since, weve grown How to be a Redhead to the brand it is now and have been featured in the biggest publications in the world. It is now our life mission to empower redheads around the world to rock it like a redhead with pure confidence.
So, here we are. Wow! The How to be a Redhead book is here, and its truly a dream come true. To make it even more exciting, this is the first beauty book dedicated to redheads. Its incredible that we are able to give you all a voice in the beauty and fashion community. There is not a minute that goes by that we do not thank our followers, whom we call our redhead beauties. We couldnt do any of this without you. Your tweets, messages, emails and comments have truly given us the confidence to rock our red hair too. We hope this book provides you with the best beauty and fashion tips for your redhead life, but most of all we hope it gives you the confidence to live a beautiful life. We hope this new platform genuinely gives all redheads an inner strength they never knew they had.
This book is making history and we are doing it together, as one beautiful community. We would not have it any other way.
Rock it like a Redhead!
Love,
Adrienne & Stephanie
I love that our hair isnt simply a color, but a real identity. One of my favorite things is to pass another natural redhead on the street, and do that little acknowledgement thing that redheads doa small nod, a tiny smilewere proud and we cheer each other on. Being a redhead means that I get to be a magical unicorn. Im part of the small population that naturally has this gorgeous color, and that makes me (and my fellow gingers) so incredibly unique.
Erin La Rosa, redhead and BuzzFeed deputy editorial director
This book will provide you with the best advice and tips for redheads, but confidence is the first step to true beauty. Since the whole world admires the beauty of red hair, redheads should feel empowered by its distinctiveness. We define redhead confidence as the ability to love, embrace and accept your red hair and unique features.
In most cases, a redhead is usually the only person with red hair in a room and it can be tough to stand out when all one wants to do (especially during the teenage years) is fit in. There are many mean nicknames and phrases used to describe a redheads presence, and many call these acts ginger bullying or redhead bullying. Were overjoyed when we hear from our followers that HowtoBeaRedhead.com has served as a positive place for redheads to feel confident enough to go to school or work. We hope this book will do the same for you.
Redheads can choose to let bullies bother them, or they can hold their head high and respond with, I know, isnt my hair amazing? It look us years to figure out this secret. Going into a shell the minute someone calls you ginger, carrot top and/or strawberry will only make situations worse. We always suggest to fake it until you feel it or to genuinely respond with a confidence-boosting response.
If youre a redhead experiencing bullying, do know that it will pass. There will be a sudden shift when everyone begins to compliment and love your red locks (for us, it was in college). It goes from, Go away, carrot top to Your hair is absolutely stunning. Children can be mean, but always know that people are envious of red hair because it is the most gorgeous hair color in the world.
