PREFACE CONTENT-BASED COLLEGE ESL INSTRUCTION: AN OVERVIEW
Loretta F. Kasper Kingsborough Community College/CUNY
Khalid had gone through a four-course ESL sequence, getting straight As in every course. After passing the English as a Second Language (ESL) exit exam with a high score, Khalid entered the mainstream college curriculum. One of his first mainstream courses was business administration, a requirement for his major. Several weeks into the semester, Khalid was in a state of panic. He had thought he knew English, but was unable to understand the lectures and the readings in his business class. When Khalid went to the business professor to ask for help, the professor told him that if he could not understand the work, he would not pass the course. Khalid was so frustrated that he wanted to drop the course. He felt he would never be able to succeed in college.
