Acknowledgments
WRITING THIS BOOK was a team effort, accomplished by scores of dedicated Management Recruiters International (MRI) associates and valued clients. If there was a captain of this team, it was Vince Webb, our multitalented marketing vice president, whose efforts ranged from inspiring MRI associates to contribute their ideas to serving as liaison between MRI and my coauthors, Bob Shook and Donna Estreicher. Vince's invaluable assistant, Karen Bloomfield, was always there, backing us up whenever needed.
My sincerest gratitude goes to the following MRI associates, who contributed many ideas that appear in this book: Robert Adler, Diane Alexander, Jessica Assal, Bill Baker, Cheryl Barry, Ed Beckett, Frank Black, Rich Bolls, Gary Bozza, Rich Bradfield, Dan Breitfeller, Liz Bruns, Jim Burt, Dennis Butler, Jim Cargill, Debra Carroll, Bob Clingan, Judy Collins, Robin Cook, Candy Cooper, Peter Cotton, Howard Couvillon, David Cox, Bart Daly, Jim Deforest, Tom DiDuca, Charlie Dowd, Majorie Forrest, Don Fowler, Pat Gardner, Pam Gilmore, Helen Gleason, Dick Govig, Ed Gridlay, Mike Hardwick, Bill Healy, Jeff Heath, Ellin Irwin, Peter Isenberg, Jim Jacobs, Paul Jardell, Bill Jose, Steve Kendall, Romaine Kleinfeldt, Don Klosterman, Dick Koob, Jeffrey Kristoff, Dan Larson, Carol Lee, Debbie Loudermilk, Diana Mashini, Doug Mendoza, Fred Meyer, Lynne Mowry, Tom Murphy, Budd Naff, Denton Neal, Martin Nicoll, Bob Plecash, Todd Provost, Pam Riddell, John Rothlein, Alan Sapega, Joni Scheps, Ed Schmitt, Clyde Schubert, Barb Seaman, Art Sheehan, Kim Simchak, Jay Sinclair, Steffani Smith, Steve Spencer, Mary Steinmann, Brett Stevens, Linda Strohan, Al Tarquinio, Bob Vierkant, Chris Walhof, Christian Ward, Tom Weider, Jerry West, Ron Whitney, and Wayne Williams.

Kudos to Bob Shook's assistants, Maggie Abel and Stormy Bailey, who spent many hours typing and editing, and then retyping and reediting. A special thank-you goes to Steve Finkel, president of Professional Search Seminars of St. Louis, a mutual friend who introduced me to Bob.
I am also indebted to our literary agent, Al Zuckerman, president of Writers House. He's considered the best in the publishing industry. Thanks also to Susan Schwartz, senior editor, and Julia Anderson, project editor, of Contemporary Books, who did a wonderful job editing the manuscript. Both of these fine women are stars in their own right.
As I said, this was a team effort, and I am very grateful for the contributions made by so many fine individuals.

Introduction
AS CEO OF THE world's largest search and recruitment firm, MRI, I'm sometimes asked what I think it takes to succeed in a highly competitive job market. My stock answer is "Be sure to get along with your boss."
A little while ago, over dinner with some MRI franchisees and managers, that remark triggered a lively discussion about different ways people score points with their bosses. Some of the comments were so intriguing, I decided to write a book on the subject.
Although I had some thoughts of my own in this area, I wanted to draw upon the expertise of others. For starters, I figured I could pick the brains of some of my company's top people. After all, these professionals have over the years placed more than half a million middle and senior managers with companies in virtually every industry across America.
So I began research for this book by surveying some 3,500 MRI professionals, men and women in constant daily contact with thousands of bosses and job seekers. Then, I surveyed some bosses among our long list of clientsCEOS, senior managers, and human resources vice presidents at thousands of the nation's leading corporations. From these sources sprang this collection of expert opinions from both inside and outside the professional headhunting industry.
